Hundred-Handed One

Deep Cut Definition

What is a "deep cut"?

It is a reference known by die-hard fans of the source material that the average player might not know. Hundred-Handed One from Theros is a good example.

Obscure Egyptian Myths

I think Amonkhet is a great top-down Egyptian world. The only thing I feel like it's lacking compared to Theros is maybe 1or 2 rares like Hundred-Handed One that feature more obscure myths. I know the obscure myths don't belong at common or uncommon, but 1 or 2 cards for those who do know Egyptian mythology better would have been cool.

There are a few of those.

White Reach History

"White has had reach long ago." You just made Hundred-Handed One cry.

It also had it last block. You didn’t let me finish. : )

Obscure References Handling

You just had a set that not only referenced the kind of obscure Hekatonkheir, but it was one of the cards most appreciated for it's union of rich flavour that matched it's mechanic. "Hundred-Handed One" wouldn't have been printed in a set that only prized "accessibility to what people know".

Notice though we did it at rare and not common.

Trivia on Card Text

The trivia question was rules text. Hundred-Handed One also counts when doing card titles.

Card Rarity Decisions

On your Theros Part 7 podcast, you explained why it was important that the hundred-handed one was rare, which makes sense, but then how did the catoblepas and hippocamp end up at common?

Because they weren’t designed top down. We just looked for card that they could be and those cards happen to be common. In a perfect world, the would probably have been a higher rarity.

Flavor Overload

Now don't get me wrong, Innistrad was great. But I'm overloading on flavour here. Chained to Rocks! Hundred-Handed One! Underworld Cerberus! I'm loving the set already just for the flavour, and I'm a Spike.

Discovering your inner Vorthos are you? : )

Hundred-Handed One

"As long as Hundred-Handed One is monstrous, it has reach and can block an additional ninety-nine creatures each combat." Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

There were a number of cards that design handed off that I really wanted to make it to print and Hundred-Handed One was one of them.
