Graven Cairns

Completing FutureShifted Dual Lands Cycle

New 08 Jun 2022 Asked by drspartan52 35 Comments

Hi Mark, can we get some insight on why Graven Cairns is the only one from the futureshifted dual lands that has gotten its cycle completed? Are the other 4 not good enough in terms of current gameplay or have they just not found their place to be made?

Those Future Sight dual land were us being pretty experimental. Not all of them are getting cycled.

Graven Cairns Cycle Origin

Was the Graven Cairns cycle already in Shadowmoor when Graven Cairns (the card) was put into Future Sight? If not, how soon was the cycle added to Shadowmoor once the theme was decided as hybrid?

Shadowmoor wasn’t designed yet so no. But we were committed to having at least one future shifted card in each of the four sets that followed Future Sight.

Futureshifted Cards Reprint

Do designers still keep an eye out for possible futureshifted cards to reprint? When I saw Graven Cairns return it was fantastic, what was even better is that it had changed to be Shadowmoor-ish

We do. And right now (things can change so they might not make it to print) there are two I know of in upcoming products.

Future Sight Teases

New 05 Nov 2012 Asked by angelanvar 3 Comments

Graven Cairns in Future Sight hinted at a return to Ulgrotha (mentioning the Sengir) but less than a year later it was released in Shadowmoor. Was this deliberate hinting at two different futures, or did something change between Future Sight and Shadowmoor?

It’s possible creative was teasing a return to Ulgothra. Future Sight has a lot of teases buried within it. I knew that Shadowmoor was going to be heavy hybrid when we were making Future Sight so the card for me was hinting at that. Then again in Future Sight the mechanical hints and the creative hints didn’t always line up.
