Multicolor Mana Costs

New 04 Jun 2017 Asked by frosty-mage-stuff 26 Comments

The last cards be printed in a standard legal expansion with lopsided, multicolor mana costs were Advent of the Wurm, Gaze of Granite, and Render Silent, all in Dragon's Maze. Is this something that R&D has made a conscious choice to stop doing? If so, why?

It’s something we only tend to do in two-color multicolor blocks, the last of which was Return to Ravnica block.

Mana Cost Mechanics

Is caring about converted mana cost (Pernicious Deed, Gaze of Granite, Abrupt Decay) a B/G thing? If so, how does that fit into the individual color pies of Green or Black? None of the other colors seem to care outside of dedicated "CMC matters"-blocks or the occasional counter like Spell Snare.

All the colors can care but I agree black and green tend to care a little more often.

Golgari's Removal Focus

Why is Golgari - a guild that has a heavy focus on creatures - getting spoiled with a large amount of removal and control spells ? Let's see : Abrupt Decay, Drown in Filth, Putrefy and Gaze of Granite, all of these in two sets ! Now, don't get mistaken, I'm quite happy about it and as an avid control player and Golgari fan I'll vastly enjoy my newly created BUG control decks, but why so much permanent removal in golgari colors ?

Golgari likes the graveyard. That includes putting things into the graveyard. : )
