Gallantry

Card Design Background

New 05 Feb 2015 Asked by jcomstock88 31 Comments

What's the story of how "Repentant Vampire" and "Gallantry" got made?

I was leading the design for Odyssey. We were trying to come up with cool threshold cards that transformed in some way and it dawned on me that a vampire that gained a conscience and then fought against black creatures would be a cool fit.

Sorin vs Angel

Did you design Sorin to be Magic's version of Angel (from Buffy)?

No Repentant Vampire from Odyssey was designed to be Magic’s version of Angel. You might also want to look at the card Gallantry. : )See below.

Are there any cards you've made as a reference to the Buffy series?

Repented Vampire and Gallantry from Odyssey. Note that the illustration of the two cards connect into one large picture.

Re repentant vampire and gallantry, any chances we'll see more cards with connected art?

It’s something we do from time to time.

Can you tell us anything about Repentant Vampire? Is it really based on angel?

It really is. Also take a look at the art for Gallantry. The two have connected art. : )

Are there any Buffy references (or nods) in Innistrad, or all of magic?

Go to Gatherer and check out Repentant Vampire and Gallantry from Odyssey. Note that their art connects.

Character Inspiration

In your article "What you know part II", talking about the art split across Repentant Vampire and Gallantry, you said "Hmmm, a black Vampire that becomes good and then attacks dark creatures, and a butt-kicking blonde." Inspiration for Sorin and Avacyn!?

I was actually talking about a different male/female pair. (Although in that case the vampire was an Angel.)

White Demons and Redemption

What's a white demon? And you a Joss Whedon fan. Redemption, man! Some of the most powerful stories are redemption stories. How does Magic show that?

Check out the card Repentant Vampire from Odyssey. Then check out Gallantry. Been there, done that.

Whedon Tribute

New 22 Jun 2012 Asked by onlytheoretical-deactivated2012 7 Comments

I have a little collection of "Joss Whedon" cards: Undead Slayer, Repentant Vampire, Firefly, and Serenity. (I am considering adding cards like Hush and Once More with Feeling to this list as well, maybe even Into the Maw of Hell). I know you're a fellow Joss Whedon fan, so ... any hope for a card called "Dollhouse"? It'd round out my collection nicely.

We have Creepy Doll. By the way, you want to add Gallantry to your list. The art for it and Repentant Vampire were done together (aka it’s one big picture).
