First Main Phase

Phase Naming Principles

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by aalgot 4 Comments

“Postcombat main phase” is a mouthful. But if you have topsy turvy then these two things aren’t equivalent. And neither are “at the beginning of your precombat main phase” and the weird “after your draw phase” thing that sagas do.

The names don’t change their order even with Topsy Turvy.

Evolution of Upkeep

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by dabudder 0 Comments

This is going to sound like a completely deranged question, but I hope you can see what I’m trying to say here.

Is the upkeep dying?

Not, of course, that the upkeep will ever be removed. nor that it will ever stop seeing use. See the popularity of the new obeka. But it seems like this idea of an ‘upkeep’ has slowly adjusted to precombat main, catalyzed primarily with the prevalence and general enjoyment of sagas in modern mtg. Do you think this is just a swing of the pendulum, or a permanent trend towards simplification of magics information tracking.

It is a change, but it’s more an evolution than a simplification. Upkeep costs haven’t been a major thing in decades.

Examining MH3 Card Usage

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by corporalotherbear 9 Comments

I noticed that a lot of MH3 cards use "At the beginning of your precombat mainphase" rather than "at the beginning of your upkeep" when they have about the same functionality. Is there any reason for that?

We prefer you having access to your card for the turn to make a more informed play.

Upkeep Step Placement

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by kilo-pascal 21 Comments

Do you feel that the upkeep step works where it is in the turn structure? I really like how sagas trigger, after the draw step. It doesn't feel likely, but could the upkeep ever be moved?

I don’t think we’ll move it. We do use beginning of first main phase a lot.

Main Phase and Combat Triggers

New 28 May 2024 Asked by shroudtailor 80 Comments

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of stuff that triggers "at the beginning of your precombat main phase" or "at the beginning of your combat phase." These triggers often feel like upkeep triggers. Why not just use the upkeep step? Isn't that what it's there for?

The timing of upkeep made a lot more sense in early Magic when it dealt with actual upkeep costs. With upkeep costs, you wanted them before the card draw, as drawing the card signified you’d passed the time to pay it. Now that most of these effects aren’t upkeep costs, you want to let players draw their cards first to have more information for when it triggers.Beginning of combat triggers are used to focus on things that are combat relevant, so we want them happening close to combat.

Precombat Phase Wording

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by mysticleviathan 16 Comments

Since there are ways to get multiple main phases, why not change “At the beginning of your precombat main phase” to “At the beginning of your first main phase”? Can’t you technically have two precombat main phases which could cause confusion? Also it’s less text and easier to understand. Unless having the potential of multiple instances of a precombat main phase is a feature and not a bug…

It is something we’ve discussed.

Combat Step Effects

New 20 Feb 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 26 Comments

With triggers at the beginning of upkeep, draw, first main phase, beginning of Combat, declare attackers or blockers and end step, why are there not more cards with until end of Combat step?

Many of them are non-intuitive, especially anything that pumps toughness.

What’s the problem with precombat main phase

It’s not a particularly elegant term.

Saga Wording

New 12 Jan 2024 Asked by pnppostgame 37 Comments

Hi Mark. This question has been on my mind for a while, but what's with the wording on sagas? Why do they use the phrase "...after your draw step" instead of "...at the beginning of your precombat main phase?"

We like to avoid saying “precombat main phase” on cards.

Upkeep Phase Placement

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by modoqm 37 Comments

"If we started Magic over, I’m pretty sure upkeep would be there." I didn't understand whether this meant "I'm pretty sure upkeep would still be there where it is" or if it meant "I'm pretty sure upkeep would be there the main phase starts".

The upkeep phase would either be between draw and pre-combat main, or it wouldn’t exist and we would have a cleaner term for start of first main phase.

Main Phase Triggers

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by rxphantom 37 Comments

"Expect more things trigger at beginning of the first main phase. We think it’s generally better than triggering at upkeep." Mark, aren't things like this the entire purpose of the upkeep phase? Unless it adds mana, why is first main phase triggering better than upkeep? Help me understand, because even the word 'upkeep' plays into this.

It has to do with what works better gameplay and designwise. If we started Magic over, I’m pretty sure upkeep would be there.

Opinions on Sagas

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by anonleoleo 43 Comments

This might be a bit different. I really dislike Sagas. It bothers me that they trigger in the main phase instead of the upkeep, and as a rules nerd I really dislike the number of special actions that they use, to say nothing of individual designs like Urza's Saga which has enough corner case rules interactions to make my eye twitch. All that said, I think you should make more Sagas. My friends love them, find them fun, and I can see they love the play patterns. So keep making more, I can deal :)

Expect more things trigger at beginning of the first main phase. We think it’s generally better than triggering at upkeep.

Upkeep Phase Changes

New 06 May 2023 Asked by moonsliceman 24 Comments

I'm enjoying DTW 1032 a lot more than I expected. Do you think there's a future where you move the upkeep to the first part of the first main phase? Or some static effect that has that change?

I doubt we’ll change the turn structure, but I do think we’ll make cards that have triggered effects there that formerly would have happen earlier.

Turn Phase Order

New 10 Feb 2023 Asked by tomorrowdogg 29 Comments

If you could go back in time to change the order of the steps/phases of a turn in Magic, would you move the upkeep step to between the draw step and the first main phase?

I haven’t done the full research on what this change would do.

Saga Trigger Timing

New 09 Feb 2023 Asked by nutsofoden 33 Comments

What was the reason for having Saga's trigger on the the Precombat main phase rather then the Upkeep? It's very confusing and creates scenarios where it feels like you have 2 upkeeps to keep track of

We want you to draw your card first. Note that we don’t use at start of upkeep triggers much anymore.

Upkeep Phase Discussion

New 22 Nov 2022 Asked by anonleoleo 43 Comments

Hey Mark, I've noticed things like Sagas and Attractions trigger in your precombat main phase, which is odd to me given that we have a phase for things that trigger turn after turn: the upkeep. So my question is, has any thought been given to rearranging the phases such that the upkeep comes after the draw? It's one of the few changes that I think would make the game much, much better.

It has been discussed.

Attraction Mechanic Confirmation

New 10 Oct 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 30 Comments

Just to clarify, my understanding is you don't roll to visit your attractions whenever you open a new attraction. Instead, you only roll once a turn during your first main phase unless a card specifically tells you to roll to visit your attractions. This means, that (usually) you can't attempt to visit an attraction you've opened until your following turn. Is that correct? If it is, did you ever test visiting an attraction for free when you initially open an attraction? Maybe I'm playing it wrong but it feels kind of disappointing to open an attraction, wait a turn to attempt to visit it, miss the visit based on your roll and have to wait another turn just to potentially visit it for the first time.

There was a version we tried where you visited an Attraction the turn you opened it. It was just too good.

Upkeep Phase Adjustments

New 07 Oct 2022 Asked by coboney 35 Comments

Why have things moved away from upkeep to the start of the precombat main phase in cases like Saga's, or the M21 Shrine cycle?

We prefer you drawing your card first.

Attractions Die Roll

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by furbyfubar 38 Comments

The article on Unfinity mechanics wasn't entirely clear on this point: The die roll for visiting attractions at the start of each first main phase is a *single* die roll for all of your attractions, right? And you only roll if you control at least one attraction? Since this is likely to come up a lot, maybe look at having the article be updated to make the answer to these questions a bit clearer?

Yes, you roll a single die for all your Attractions, and only if you control at least one Attraction.

Shrine Cards Timing Logic

New 14 Feb 2022 Asked by jjarnone-blog 39 Comments

Can you go into the reasoning behind why each of the cycles of shrines trigger at different parts of the turn? (CHK at upkeep, NEO at end step, and and three of the M21 at beginning of precombat main-phase)

I think they decided to have the timing maximize with the effect.
