Hound Rule Change Inquiry

New 25 Dec 2020 Asked by dreadnaut3447 35 Comments

So, I was wondering: If since there was a need for the ruling of the hound rules change into counting as dogs, does this mean there is a sufficient understanding to make a precedence for things like Unicorns / Pegasus / any other horse related sub-creature type to count as horses? I ask because the game only has 37 creatures that have the type horse. This restriction makes cards like Crested Sunmare very limited in playability and synergy creation. I feel after hounds, this is relevant. Thanks!

All we did with dogs was change the word “hound” to the word “dog”. The subset of canines didn’t get any bigger. It’s not a parallel situation.

Why is Mesa Unicorn not a Horse? Was Crested Sunmare Horse Tribal too powerful in playtest?

Because Unicorns are Unicorns. Have been since Alpha.

Non-Traditional Lords

How often are we going to see tribal lords that don't grant a bonus in power and thoughness like Crested Sunmare?

We like to mix things up. Also, Crested Sunmare was not a traditional lord.

Mare Cycle Consideration

If Thundermare, Timbermare, and Nightmare were to be a cycle, would you consider Crested Sunmare as part of it?

I don’t. The adjective in front of the name is a clue it wasn’t intended to match them.

Why is it "Crested Sunmare" instead of just "Sunmare" to continue the cycle of Nightmare, Thundermare and Timbermare?

It’s not a cycle.

Crested Sunmare Species Choice

Could Crested Sunmare have been a camel instead of Horse? Or is Camel too relevant compared to Horse?

It could have been a Camel but there would be two problems:1) It would have greatly restricted how many other Camels we could have in the block.2) There aren’t enough Camels in Magic to build a tribal deck with the card.

Crested Sunmare Query

Isn't Crested Sunmare kind of big for a horse? It's a little immersion breaking that a horse can attack fearlessly into a Glorybringer.

It’s no ordinary horse.

Crested Sunmare Design

Is Crested Sunmare able to be a more powerful lord because it uses such a little-used creature type? I feel it would be weaker and/or higher cost if it was a Cat or Cleric and even more so for a characteristic or iconic.

The card needs to have either a unique or seldom used creature type at that cost.
