Viashino Typing

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by llanowarminotaur 70 Comments

Why should types that are original Magic IP like Viashino be folded into generic types like Lizard, but the same is not true for UB types like Astartes or Cyberman? Is there no value to building resonance for Magic's IP?

The Viashino are still flavorfully Viashino. It’s still a unique race of creatures. That’s what they’re called. All we’re changing is their creature type. We’ve decided to be consistent with how we’re labeling animal humanoids such that they and their animal equivalent are connected typally.

UB Creature Types

About UB and creature types: Is it up to the licensor whether new creature types are needed? For example, Warhammer got Astartes instead of Human, but LotR got Halfling instead of Hobbit.

It’s up to us. I think we’re finding our feet on where to be generic versus specific. I think we’re learning that generic is better when it can tie into existing mechanical themes.

W40K Decks Feedback

How are you Mark? How were the W40K commanders decks received? Any chance for us to see an in MTG version of some necron, astarte or tyranid popular card?

They were received well. There are no immediate plans to make in-universe Magic versions, but it’s something we can do if we find the right place for it.

Universes Within Creature Types

New 12 Dec 2022 Asked by quantext 38 Comments

Theoretically if Warhammer 40k cards got a Universes Within version, would they retain creature types like Astartes or Necron that are originally from Warhammer 40k? Or would they be changed to something more Magic-like, such as human or skeleton?

Theoretically, we’d make a brand new, but mechanically equivalent, creature type.

Universes Within Strategy

Hey Mark. It was suggested that, if needed, a "Universes Within" version of a UB card can be printed. But how can you make a "Universes Within" version of UB card if the creature type is exclusive to the UB IP? How do you make a "Universes Within" version of a "Tyranid" or "Astartes"?

If that need arises, we will make a new in-universe creature type that is 1-for-1 with that creature type and the game will count them as the same.

Errataing Warhammer Creatures

New 15 Sep 2022 Asked by funnyjoemama 19 Comments

What's the problem with simply errataing the Warhammer creatures to be normal Magic types? Sure, it's a functional change, but it would be more like the cards are a part of Magic. Plus, I doubt types like Astartes will be used again, so why not just make them equivalent to Humans, for example?

It would be functional errata.

Generic Types Usage

New 15 Sep 2022 Asked by tmbocheeko 21 Comments

Hey Mark, the 40K decks add both generic types (like Inquisitor and arguably Primarch) and 40K specific types (like Tyranid and Astartes.) You already mentioned we might see different types for the specific types in the Universes Within versions, but are the generic types on the table for other products?

It matters case by case, but potentially.

Warhammer 40k Typeline

New 13 Sep 2022 Asked by lykrast 90 Comments

If you were to print a magic version of one of the Warhammer 40k cards, it'll have to keep its typeline right? Does that mean magic will have its own "definition" of Tyranid/Astarte/Necron if needed?

If it ever came to this, here’s our current thinking: We would create a brand new creature type which would be swapped one for one with that IP-centric creature type. For example, all uses of <blah> in this Universes Beyond product will be <unique new creature type> if done in a Magic version. The <IP name> and <unique new creature type> would be one for one in the rules much like the names of the Godzilla skinned cards.
