Act on Impulse

Chandra's Goggles

RE: GOGGLES. chandra is depicted wearing her goggles (over her eyes) on at least 5 cards: act on impulse, chandra pyromaster, chandra's fury, chandra's revolution, and fiery confluence. there are also multiple cards where she is facing away from the viewer or depicted too small to tell if she is wearing them. young pyromancer, who is dressed to look like chandra, also has the goggles on.

Aetherborn Alignment

New 13 Jan 2022 Asked by jessaaayyy 33 Comments

Would it make sense for aetherborn to be in red, since they have such short lives they try and act on impulse and emotion and not waste the little time they have?

I think on another world with a slightly different take, the Aetherborn could have been red.

Naming Coincidence

New 17 Dec 2018 Asked by cntrstrk14 14 Comments

The card "Act on Impulse"— I've wondered if this card at one point had it's final name and "exile 4" in development so that it mirrored the card Impulse. Was there a conscious connection with the card Impulse when this card was named or is it just a coincidence?

The card was designed long before it got named, so the two were never connected.

Red's Memory Issue

New 21 Oct 2015 Asked by makesyourworld 23 Comments

Would it begin to be a color pie problem if Red had any "Act on Impulse" effects that lasted until the beginning of your next turn, instead of just until the end of turn?

It’s more of a memory issue than a color pie issue.

Red Draw Timing

New 05 Jul 2015 Asked by victorsantmaker 32 Comments

I feel that the "red draw" just doesn't feel right when it is 'until end of turn' (like Act on Impulse) instead of 'until the end of your next turn' (like Commune with Lava). The "act on impulse" way actually DON'T allows you to "act on impulse" (I.E. casting the spell on curve), you need to wait to have spare mana, or you end exling something you can't cast because you tapped out. So, why we have more 'act on impulse' and less 'commune with lava'?

I can see the argument that what you’re suggesting is more mechanically flexible, but I don’t see how giving you more time improves the flavor of acting on impulse.

Mechanic Naming

New 29 Sep 2014 Asked by prometheuswasabro-deactivated20 30 Comments

What do you call the mechanic that Prophetic Flamespeaker, Act on Impulse and Chandra, Pyromaster share? The one that peels stuff off the top of deck but is lost permanently at end of turn if not used. I love the effect but I'm not aware of a shorthand for it. Thanks!

In design, we’ve been calling it impulsive draw.

Contribution Acknowledgment

Act on Impulse is a sweet card and hits on many things discussed here on Blogatog... But I thought you didn't work on Core Set design teams? Was this your doing?

Adding the impulsive draw ability to red was my doing.

Card Zone Mechanics

New 02 Jul 2014 Asked by kaiserruhsm 18 Comments

Was putting the unplayed cards into the graveyard like on three wishes really too good for act on impulse? Also that reminder text is really clumsy.

Having them move zones if they aren’t cast is extra needless text.

Red Card Draw Appeal

New 02 Jul 2014 Asked by fadesniping-blog 26 Comments

What is the appeal to Act on Impulse and Chandra Pyromaster's 0 ability? You have to pay the cost to get the "draw", but then you have to pay the actual card's cost to use it. It seems like a 2-for-1 IF you draw the cards you need.

Red doesn’t have a lot of access to card draw.
