Thanks for the kind words.

Birthday Trivia

New 15 Mar 2019 Asked by sailor-star-trek 53 Comments

Hey Mark, love your work. It was my birthday yesterday and I turned 28. I was hoping I could get some trivia on the 28th card of Ravnica Allegiance—Twilight Panther OR the 28th card of Guilds of Ravnica—Take Heart. Or something else 28-related??? Thanks for everything!

Cats keep proving themselves more and more popular, so we’ve upped the amount we use over the years.Happy Birthday!

Mentor Mechanic Targeting

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by yespleasemissmegido 27 Comments

Relating to a Take Heart question from a while back: why does mentor target? It only seems to hurt potential interactions with cards like Take Heart or the firebreathing on Goblin Banneret, and confuse newer players, as it's not obvious at all why these interactions don't work.

Not targeting causes its own collection of confusing interactions.

Common Card Interaction

Mark, why does Take Heart, a *common*, look like it works so well with mentor unless you understand a fairly technical part of the rules?

It works just fine if you use it on your Mentor creature before you declare them as an attacker. It was made an instant so you can use it as a surprise, but yes you can’t do that and trigger Mentor. There are certain things we assume players will learn as they play. If we never allowed commons that could get misplayed in combination with other cards, we’d have trouble making instants at common.

Future of Birthing Pod

New 27 Jun 2012 Asked by theheadiestbrah-blog 3 Comments

I think it's fair to say Birthing Pod is widely accepted as a very strong card with regard to both flavor and power level. It's functionality, in the vein of Natural Order/Food Chain/Survival of the Fittest seems to be a relatively recurrent aspect of Green's slice of the pie. I imagine that due to Birthing Pod's Phyrexian mana cost it will likely never see an exact reprint, but with it's success would you venture to say that we are likely to see a functional reprint perhaps sooner than later?

You’ll notice a trend in Magic’s history that we tend to riff designs off of popular cards. Birthing Pod lovers, take heart - I’m sure we will riff off its design one day.
