Segovian Leviathan

Segovia Naming Origin

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by gevth 138 Comments

I had a coworker whose last name is Segovia. He is 6.5 ft tall and weighed easily over 200lb. Any insight or trivia on how Segovia* got its name?*The plane, my coworker probably got it from his father

Here’s the story. Segovian Leviathan was in Legends. Everything about the name and art (see the wee whales) implies it’s a giant creature, but it’s only a 3/3. Players would joke about this, so the creative team came up with an answer. There was a world Segovia (based off the name) where everything is much smaller. That’s why this giant creature is 3/3.

Segovia Scale Issues

RE: segovia - according to an article written by doug beyer in 2009 people who travel to the plane are automatically shrunk down to segovian scale (1:100). the existence of the card segovian leviathan would then make one assume that creatures which are summoned from segovia don't scale up? all of this is somewhat confusing and completely ruins a key plot point in my segovia based romantic fanfiction.

Okay, I’d trust Doug.

Creature Size Consistency

"When you summon them to another world, they stay small." In the game, we (the planeswalkers) constantly summon creatures from other planes to fight for us. Why does that never happen in the story?

It does. Segovian Leviathan, which we see in the art is many times larger than a whale, is but a 3/3.

Segovian Block Viability

Do you think a block taking place on Segovia would be at all viable, seeing as the Segovian Leviathan is a 3/3?

I don’t think we could do a block where the biggest creature was a 3/3. So it might not be a small world after all. Sorry, Disney.

Innistrad Culture Fact

I forgot to ask my birthday question! Could you tell me anything about Innistrad culture, or any really cool fact you would really like to share about it as a plane that you haven't gotten the chance to previously?

Segovia (the plane of tiny things) got created to explain a poor combination of art with power/toughness. (The Segovian Leviathan - look it up). Happy Birthday!

Segovia Joke Insight

My guess is that most people missed your Segovia joke from the SDCC panel. It made me laugh quite hard. Thanks. :-)

You’re welcome. I never shy away from very in-jokes.To those who don’t know the background. Long ago, in an early set called Legends, we had a card called Segovian Leviathan. The art showed a giant leviathan so big that a whale next to it looked like a tiny fish. But the card was a 3/3. How could this be possible? It was then explained that Segovia was a plane where everything was super tiny, ergo a 3/3 leviathan. Thus my joke that I would visit Segovia because I’d be a giant.

Creature Size Logic

"Giant Spider is a 2/4" And Segovian Leviathan is a 3/3. :P

And we made an entire plane of Segovia full of miniature creatures to explain Segovian Leviathan away. I’m not even joking.
