Phyrexian Negator

Black Creature Design

What happened to black's tendency for above rate creatures with a downside? I'm thinking of classic cards like Flesh Reaver and Phyrexian Negator, but also even something as simple as Vampire Lacerator. The most recent one I can think of is the 2 mana 3/3 in midnight hunt that exploits to kills a Planeswalker and makes you lose one life each turn. Is this a space that is becoming increasingly hard to design for with the continually increasing power of creatures?

Downsides just aren’t super popular. We still do them, just at a lower volume.

Reserved List Opinion

On Phyrexian Negator and the Reserve List, Chronicles burned me and I quit the game. Today, I think it would be healthy to have some loopholes. I have less respect for WotC sticking to a policy that benefits far fewer people today than it used to.

We’ve done research on opinions on the Reserved List. The pro-Reserved List crowd stays mostly silent on social media, but it’s a much bigger number than I assume most of you guess it is.

Phyrexian Negator Loophole

Didn't you already ignore the reserve list when you reprinted Phyrexian Negator in Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs. the Coalition? What good is an agreement if you ignore it whenever it's convenient for you? This doesn't make me respect WOTC in the least.

The Phyrexian Negator in that set was a premium (foil) which was allowed under the Reserved List, but it upset enough players we vowed to never use that loophole again.

Reserved List Impact

Since Phyrexian Negator was reprinted in DD: Coalition v Phyrexia but is on the reserved list, does that prevent that Duel Deck from being reprinted in an Duel Deck Anthology?

The deck would have to be slightly altered.

Maro Urza's Destiny was absolutely amazing. Emperor Crocodile, Patten of Rebirth, Metal Worker, Yawgmoth's Bargain, Phyrexian Negator, Treachery. Thank you.

You’re welcome. I’m very proud of my solo-design of Urza’s Destiny.

Phyrexian Negator Uproar

Were people really so incensed that Phyrexian Negator, a not very powerful card that doesn't see any competitive play, was reprinted?

More than you know.

Dual Decks Loophole

New 18 Nov 2013 Asked by monktyddpl 10 Comments

are dual decks a way to get around the reprint policy? or why was phyrexian negator reprinted?

It was us trying to see if using a loophole could help us work around the Reserved List. It ended up instead being a land mine and the loophole was closed.

Reserved List Policy

i know that you are a supporter of following the reserved list, even if people disagree with what's on it. however, i do know you reprinted phyrexian negator... why?

We tried to see if we could stretch the boundaries a little on the Reserved List to free up a few cards we felt would benefit the game. It blew up in our faces. Note that Negator was printed in premium which technically does not break what the original Reserved List promised. We have since said we would not reprint the Reserved List in premium version.

Phyrexian Negator Reserved

New 12 Jun 2012 Asked by thealter22 3 Comments

Why is Phyrexian Negator on the reserved list? He seems like a great card to add to the modern card pool.

He’s on the list because many years ago we had to pick 80% of the rares and put them on the Reserved List (per the rules of the Reserved List). Modern was fifteen years away from existing at that point.
