Unspoiled Card Releases

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by krarkrosewater 3 Comments

Hi mark! Do you think wizards would ever make a product with some cards that are not spoiled until players find them? I think magic is better when we know all the cards but it would be very exciting to discover cards too. What do you think ?

It’s very hard to do. We just live in the age of information, meaning it’s difficult to keep everyone from knowing something once anyone knows. And as leaks demonstrate, it can be hard even when we’re trying to keep something secret.

Leak Consequences

New 27 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 1 Comments

My feeling on leaks has not changed. I believe leaks result in worse previews and actively hurt influencers that depend upon previews. But can’t the creators who do reactions to the previews just do so to the leaks instead.

Previews (meaning new previews when you’re the one doing the actual previewing) drive a lot of traffic and are a huge deal to the people that get them.

Feelings on Leaks

Years ago you expressed some pretty strong feelings against leaks and did a podcast about the topic. Given all the recent leaks with sets like MH3 do you still feel the same way?

Teaser Impact

New 11 May 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 27 Comments

"I have you officially run my teaser by internal people, and right now they’re saying “no teaser”. How do others feel?" Can you please poll your question marks about this? I find it difficult to believe there would be a significant number of people who wouldn't want a teaser, even if someone looked at all of the leaks I don't know why they still would explicitly not want a teaser to be created.

One of the key functions of the teaser is to create online conversation. If every tease is just followed by “It’s blah”, it loses a lot of its impact.

Leak Consequences

"I’m not sure I’m doing a teaser. The leaks make it hard to do it in a way that will lead to the effect I aim for when making the teaser."

I hope you reconsider this. There are players that deliberately go out of their way to avoid unofficial leaks (which can be challenging from a will power perspective) so it would be unfortunate to also lose out on your teaser for such an interesting and dynamic set.

For what it's worth, I'd imagine there's enough stuff that wasn't leaked so you could make a teaser that includes several hints that are are still a surprise to even those who saw the leaks.

Teaser Uncertainty

Hi Mark,Really excited for MH3 around the corner, when does your teaser come out for it?

I’m not sure I’m doing a teaser. The leaks make it hard to do it in a way that will lead to the effect I aim for when making the teaser.

Compliments to the Team

New 30 Apr 2024 Asked by omegaplatinum 37 Comments

Hey Maro, as a long time player, big props to the team for acknowledging the leaks today. Blake's article is pretty great, and including a cameo from Bob from Accounting was an excellent choice. Could you give him a high five for me? I can't find his professional socials if he has any.

Will do.

Issue with Spoiler Link

New 30 Apr 2024 Asked by light-bender 38 Comments

Hello, I always try and avoid leaks because I look forward to spoiler season, but I noticed there have been so many MH3 leaks that y'all put up an article about it today, but when I go to click it it says file 404 not found - is this an error or did yall decide to take it down?

The link has been fixed.

Early Card Leaks

New 24 Apr 2023 Asked by cashmoneymisplay 101 Comments

Does it bother you when cards are leaked early before they were scheduled to be spoiled?

It bothers me greatly. Imagine instead of a carefully created trailer, a movie you’re excited to see is spoiled by someone showing random ten-second scenes from it.

Issues with Unofficial Leaks

New 28 Feb 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 82 Comments

Can you please do something about unofficial leaks? They ruin the anticipation and hype of the actual preview season which dampen the appeal of future sets and they are virtually impossible to avoid for those of us who actively follow and spend time in Magic related social media communities.

Unofficial, by definition, means it’s outside of our control. Trust me, if I had the power up shut down unofficial leaks, I’d do it on a heartbeat. As regular readers know, I am not a fan of them.

Accidental Leaks on Blog

New 21 Feb 2022 Asked by paladin-of-the-small 76 Comments

Has anyone ever pointed out you let something slip on this blog you shouldn’t have?

I’ve slipped a number of minor things and a few things that required you to know something a different person said to figure something out, but luckily never anything major. Probably my biggest goof was saying Dinosaur instead of Dragon in a podcast a year before Ixalan, but no one thought it was a leak, just me confusing words.

Handling Card Spoiler Leaks

New 18 Jun 2021 Asked by dusqofrakdos 34 Comments

With all of the different outlets for spoilers during spoiler season, do you keep track of what cards have been spoiled by date in case someone were to ask about a card that has been leaked but not officially spoiled? It seems like it could be hard to catch with everything going on sometimes.

I have a rough idea, but don’t know every card’s preview date.

Addressing Leaks

New 24 Dec 2020 Asked by sneak-theif 51 Comments

When non official and potentially fake leaks occur do you guys want to be told or do you have to take a very hands off "can't comment" approach? (I imagine Wizards picks up on them rather quick)

We never comment on leaks, real or fake.

Concern over Delayed Spoiler Season

New 18 Mar 2020 Asked by clearwonderlandcheesecake-deact 133 Comments

I may be unfair to complain, coming from a time where we wouldn't know what cards we would open on a booster when the set was released. Even so, I gotta be vocal about having a spoiler season promised to us at a very late date and then having it postponed again. And I don't see how giving info on the set having an extra mechanic is any helpful. So please, when the full set from a shop in Spain like they always do, don't come public to complain on how you hate leaks. Sorry I have to be vocal.

I honestly feel your pain. This whole Pandemic is stress inducing, and that’s from someone living at ground zero (King County) here in the U.S. I’m sorry I wrote down the wrong date and it got printed in my article. We corrected in just a few hours, but I get that news travels fast. Had this been business as normal this last week and not a chaotic transition to work at home, I’m pretty confident the mistake would have been caught and fixed.Preview seasons take a long time to put together and there’s a huge amount of coordination as there’s tons of moving pieces. It’s just not something that’s easy to move. In fact, it’s a pretty monumental task in normal times, and this is far from that. I get a lot of messages from the public. I truly sense that everyone is eager for things to take their minds off the scariness that is today’s news. And we’re doing our best to help with that, but people wanting something quicker does not magically make it any easier on our end to make it quicker. Like everyone, we’re doing the best we can to adapt to a pretty fast moving reality. I promise you we’ve put together an awesome set, and it won’t be that long before you can all start talking all about it. And when that day comes, I promise I have tons to share with you all. Thanks.

Impact of Pre-spoiler Leaks

New 24 Nov 2019 Asked by msprzegaj 56 Comments

Do pre-spoiler leaks affect sales?

To the best we can tell, they’ve historically lowered sales. You want the peak of excitement to be when players can buy product.

Impact of Leaks

New 04 Sep 2019 Asked by sundsted 67 Comments

Does wizards have any market data that suggests leaks adversely affect sales or are they frowned upon simply for being illegal?

Yes, we have data that they adversely affect sales, the larger the gap between them happening and the set releasing, the bigger the impact. Also, it messes up our carefully planned preview plan which we believe lessens the experience for the player when learning the new set.

Handling Leak Issues

New 18 May 2019 Asked by sircaelum-deactivated20190608 37 Comments

Mark, leaks from upcoming sets make me sad, and can ruin the fun of a spoiler season. Is Wizards, to your knowledge, planning on doing something to prevent future leaks?

It’s always our intent to have no leaks. If you see a leak, it happen despite our work to prevent it.

Avoiding Spoilers

New 18 Apr 2019 Asked by slicehazard 82 Comments

Felt I should share that normally I'm someone who read card leaks without hesitation, but War of the Spark is the first set I've actively avoided doing so. The narrative structure of the reveals added a compelling element that wasn't there before. So hats off to you all! It's really been something special.

I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

Sticky Note Smile

New 16 Apr 2019 Asked by dementeddr 55 Comments

Mark, I just wanted to say that I've been playing magic since og Innistrad, and this has easily been the coolest, most exciting spoiler season I've ever watched, leaks and all. I cannot wait to play with all of these awesome cards. Since your hand are probably worn out from high-fiving, can you just take a sticky note and draw a big smiley face on it and stick it somewhere for everyone to see?

Can do.

R-Rated Podcast Idea

New 13 May 2018 Asked by zwomally 165 Comments

How about a ticked off Maro podcast? R-Rated as previously suggested. You could rant on the Weatherlight story, leaks, mistakes you’ve made on the podcast previously, color pie breaks, bananas, all the worst things.

Ooh, a Maro rants podcast has potential.
