Fauna Shaman

Tutors In Standard

I wanted to ask about something that doesn't seem to jive with what you've said on this blog and on other WotC channels. Fauna Shaman is back in standard, a Black tutor is back... Blue got Solve the Equation shortly ago.... you've been printing quite a few tutors in Standard-Legal sets. I'm not complaining... it just seems odd since you've said that tutors are bad (variance concerns) and that you guys don't like shuffling (which got Yorion banned in a roundabout way). What's changed?

We do make tutors from time to time. I’ve said we’ve shied away from tutor mechanics for repetition of gameplay issues.

Appreciation for Reprints

Can you give a huge hi-five to the team for reprinting some amazing cards in Brothers' War. Not only do we have the retro artifacts, both Fauna Shaman and Diabolic Intent are in the main set. Please keep putting sweet reprints into standard packs.

High fives shall be applied.

Fauna Shaman Naming

Why was Fauna Shaman not Magus of the Fittest?

It was in a core set and we do Maguses in supplemental sets now.

Strictly Better Card Issue

New 10 Jul 2012 Asked by mongrel714-blog-blog 10 Comments

In M11, you included a card that is strictly better than another card in the same set (Runeclaw Bear vs Fauna Shaman). Both 2/2s for the exact same mana cost, but one is vanilla and the other has an ability powerful enough to have placed it in pro decks. I have never seen this happen in previous sets, and honestly it kind of irks me that card balance is seemingly ignored. I guess what I want to know is, how does something like this happen? Is it endorsed by the devs? Or was this a mistake?

Trading card games do “strictly betters”. We don’t often put them in the same set but sometimes it happens because both cards serve a purpose. It happens more often in core sets.
