Historic Horizons and Paper Game Connection

New 27 Jul 2021 Asked by bassimelwakil 51 Comments

I really like Historic Horizons embracing the fact mtg is digital and I see it as yet another opportunity for silver border to shine, because silver border is really the only place mtg has embraced that it’s a physical paper game. Dexterity cards (not just Slaying Mantis or Boomstaker type things, but also Hot Fix and Cramped Bunker) , sub games, and caring about people outside the game, and even speaking (Gotcha wasn’t great, but there’s other ways to play with that). Here’s hoping I’ve given you another talking point in your quest to green light another un-set! :)

You’re preaching to the choir, but I appreciate the enthusiasm for Un-sets. Feel free to communicate with others Wizards folk that you’d like to see more Un-sets.

Potential Black-border Ideas

Now that die rolling has made it into black-border, what other previously un-exclusive ideas are thought to be able to make the shift? I personally like the idea of cards touching one another (most easily-grokkable in Cramped Bunker), but that might be a little bit out there.

I’m skeptical “physical proximity matters” is coming to black border any time soon.

I would like a clarification on Cramped Bunker. If Amy played it and Ned and I put our permanents touching it, then it comes around to my turn again, I don't have to avoid touching Amy's permanents according to your previous rulings. Do I have to avoid touching only my own permanents, or both Ned's and my permanents? Thank you for squeezing this question in!

You have to worry about anyone’s permanents that are touching it. You don’t have to worry about permanents not touching it.

Someone played cramped bunker in a game un commander the other opponent covered it with his cards before my turn, is that also against the rules?

Yes. The only thing you should be concerned with is your own cards.

Cramped Bunker Placement

What's the deal with placement of cramped bunker? I've had the player playing it ask if they can surely d it with their own permanents which seems against the un-spirit

It’s also against the rules of the card. I’ve ruled on this numerous times. Keep your cards away and let you opponent deal with their own cards.

Cramped Bunker Rules

My drafting group had rule troubles with Cramped Bunker, which is unfortunate because we had 2 of them in a 4 person draft! Cramped Bunker doesn't specify if the owner of it can put their own permanents around the bunker to prevent their opponents from doing so. A little clarification here please? :)

No, they can’t. Plus, it only counts if your cards touch your other cards.

How does Cramped Bunker interact with sleeves? Are sleeves considered part of a card for its purposes? Will players have to desleeve cards to put them in the bunker? Can players sleeve and desleeve cards during a game? Can I refuse to desleeve cards? If I doublesleeve Cramped Bunker, or put it in a toploader, will it just destroy everything? Can I lacquer my card in Rhino Lining and call that a sleeve to make sure that happens?

The sleeve is considered an extension of the card.

If you were to put Cramped Bunker in one of the really large oversized sleeves, would it still be considered an extension of the card? Or would that not be allowed? Could you switch the sleeves before you cast the card or would your whole deck have to be in the giant sleeves?

The card sleeves need to be normal sized card sleeves.

If Cramped Bunker is in a sleeve, do the cards still count as touching it if they are in a sleeve?

In Un-games, the sleeve is considered an extension of the card.

About Cramped Bunker, are the opponents allowed to move Cramped Bunker to an open area where they can freely put permanents or can the owner "fortify" it by putting other permanents around Cramped Bunker, so no opponent can put cards touching Cramped Bunker but not other permanents?

Cramped Bunker only cares about cards touching the Cramped Bunker touching each other. In general though, give players space around the Cramped Bunker to interact with it.

Cramped Bunker Strategy

Figured it would be in the FAQ, but as it's not, I assume you can't just move your cards to cover up all edges of Cramped Bunker when it enters? Or else it would just detonate on your opponent's next upkeep and blow up everything.

Players can’t block access to Cramped Bunker with other cards.
