Functional Reprints

I know you guys said you wouldn't do functional erratas on things like the nephilim, ankle shanker, soulfire grandmaster, ECT but what about functional reprints? That way it'll keep the old cards intact

Functional reprints do happen from time to time. Dream Spoilers in Wilds of Eldraine is an example.

Becoming Legendary

New 16 Dec 2020 Asked by yungwavemaster 40 Comments

Hi Mr. Rosewater, for my birthday/Hannukah question, I'd like to know more about how a creature becomes legendary. At what point(s) in development can a creature earn its legendary status? For example, Ankle Shanker depicts a specific goblin on Tarkir, but I'm guessing she missed her chance. Thank you and chag sameach!

It can go both directions. Sometimes a card is designed top down to match a character and sometimes we realize a design we already have could be a certain character. Also, sometimes for play design reasons, we make a card legendary.

Meddling Kids' Interpretation

Un-Rules question: When Meddling Kids refers to a card's "text box", what part of the card is that? If I choose the word "Goblin", my opponent can't cast Dragon Fodder, but can they cast Goblin Game? What about Ankle Shanker?

The text box is where the rules text, reminder text and flavor text reside. Meddling Kids do not affect a card’s title, mana cost, card type line, power/toughness or any legal text/collector number info.
