Mammal Prejudice in Whale Cards

New 25 Oct 2021 Asked by cheesedurian-deactivated2023010 44 Comments

Why are Whales left out from the big and watery creatures party? There are 5 blue cards (ex. Whelming Wave) that reference Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses and Serpents. There are even more Whale cards than Octopuses (12 Whales vs 10 Octopuses).

There’s always another creature type you could include and we had to draw the line somewhere. My best guess is the original four had to do with the set it was first introduced in. Or maybe it was just some mammal prejudice. : )

Flavor Text on Cards

What do you call cards with rules text that mostly exists for flavor? Like how Whelming Wave returns all creatures to their owners' hands (except Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents)

“Trinket text” is text more for flavor than mechanical interaction. I’m not sure that text on Whelming Wave is meant as trinket text though.

Squid Exclusion Reasoning

Live the blog. I've been wondering why Squids weren't included in the Whelming Wave avoidance as a creature of the dark depths?

I live it every day. : ) As for why we drew the kind where we did, we couldn’t include everything so we picked the stuff we felt mattered most.

Whelming Wave Text

Why doesn't Whelming Wave list squid in its exceptions for creature types? Seems like it should...

There’s only so much text space. Here’s looking at you, squid.

Master of Waves Query

In the midst of all this enchantment debate I'm here to cut to the real questions that need answered... How can the Master of Waves be disrupted by a Whelming Wave? I believe this is the true failure of the block.

Octopus Plural Form

How much debate was there on the plural of 'Octopus' on Whelming Wave?

Not much. While both are acceptable, one is the preferred usage in the dictionary.

Whelming Wave Origins

I'm pretty sure that Whelming Wave references the types mentioned in Quest for Ula's Temple. And considering Kiora is from Zendikar, I don't think it's a coincidence.

There are no coincidences. : )

Whale Bouncing Logic

New 07 Feb 2014 Asked by singerofw 33 Comments

Why does Whelming Wave bounce whales? And right after we got one in M14, too.

I think Kiora has a thing against whales. Maybe they teased her in her youth. The real answer is there’s only so much space in the text box so we picked the big aquatic things from the block.

Thassa Versus Kiora

New 03 Feb 2014 Asked by mrtitanic 45 Comments

I love Kiora treading on Thassa's domain. Can we expect an article/story about how Thassa and Kiora interact? I can't imagine Thassa appreciating Kiora stealing krakens and sending a Whelming Wave over to Meletis. God confronts Planeswalker - do it!

If you enjoy Kiora and Thassa, there is more coming. : )

Octopus Plural Form

New 21 Jan 2014 Asked by kirkgaitskell 32 Comments

In regards to Whelming Wave: Shouldn't the plural of octopus be octopi? Or is it octopuses because its referring to the card's subtype not the actual creature?

Both are considered acceptable but octopuses is basically considered “more correct” by the proper sources. For what is worth, I personally like “octopi” because it sounds neater.
