Poison Counter Mechanics

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by gmzombie007 30 Comments

Hey Mark I've been away from this Tumblr but I'm wondering why a card wasn't made to counter the effects of poison? Like a reprint of solemnity or even a card that would take a few turns to remove all poison in flavor of the story how they used a spark and melira to cleanse the spark of ajani and what they tried with Nissa. I think that was a flavor fail and playpoint fail. My hope is you guys at least print something that fixes this in the future for standard. I had so much fun with the prerelease this past weekend by the way. I love the enchanted tales addition. I had to run green as I pulled a doubling season and a foil defense of the heart lol.

One of the defining qualities of poison in the game is that it can’t be removed. It makes it play very differently than life and makes the mechanic feel more threatening. Note there are cards that can help you prevent getting future poison, just none that take away what you already have (okay except Leeches, but I pretend that card doesn’t exist).

Tickets Counter Mechanics

Are tickets counters like Energy is? They seem similar conceptually (resource that you gain and spend that's tallied against the player), so I was wondering if they interacted the same with cards like solemnity?

Yes, tickets are counters, so Solemnity would stop a player from getting them.

Solemnity and Poison Counters

New 21 Jun 2018 Asked by shadowknight1224 26 Comments

Hey, Mark! Isn't Solemnity a way to avoid getting poison counters? So am I right to assume it's okay to protect a player from getting them at all but not okay to remove them once they're obtained?

Preventing poison counters is fine. The issue is once you have poison, it’s not going away.

Solemnity Question Removal

The last ask about Solemnity has been deleted. Any insight as to why?

Because I didn’t read the card correctly and thus gave an incorrect answer.

Solemnity Mechanics

Why doesn't Solemnity work on planeswalkers? Is WOTC pushing too much?

Because it keeps you from getting counters. You don’t get loyalty counters, the planeswalker cards do.

Blue's Defensive Mechanism

New 17 Jul 2017 Asked by shadowknight1224 26 Comments

If Blue is the most reactively defensive colour, is it possible it could get the ability to interact with things outside the stack (other than bouncing them)? Could a different take on Solemnity, for example, exist in Blue?

That’s being proactive not reactive. Being reactive means waiting for the thing you want to stop to happen before you then stop it.

Counters in Color Pie

New 16 Jul 2017 Asked by andreabonato94 29 Comments

Where is the "you/players/permanents can't get counters/get one less counter" effect in the color pie? We've seen in green (Melira) and recently in white (Vizier of Remedies and Solemnity), so I think it's primary in white. Could it change based on the type of counter? (some years ago you said that it was a one-of effect and could be in every color but now it doesn't seem one-of anymore)

It feels more white as white is the most proactively defensive color.

Solemnity's Origin

Is Solemnity a design card, development card or from the new play team?

Development, I believe, as an answer to energy. Play Design did not exist yet.
