Can you do a set where they have to stop a spreading plague?

The was kind of Scars of Mirrodin block. It wasn’t stopped.

Scars of Mirrodin Design Stress

New 26 Jun 2024 Asked by rxphantom 2 Comments

"The design for Scars of Mirrodin was my most stressful point in my career." Can you elaborate?

The short version. Scars of Mirrodin was originally New Phyrexia. We would visit New Phyrexia for the block and only at the very end would we learn it was Mirrodin.I had real trouble making the original New Phyrexia. Bill was so unhappy with the progress that he threatened to take me off the design. I had a month to fix it.I eventually had the realization that we needed to end on New Phyrexia. The block wanted to tell the story of Mirrodin falling to the Phyrexians.Bill came up with the idea that we wouldn’t announce who won the war in the middle set until the third set came out. We advertised it as Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia.

No Phyrexianized Arcbound Creatures

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 30 Comments

Why didn't we see any Phyrexianized version of Arcbound creatures?

Scars of Mirrodin block used -1/-1 counters and Arcbound creatures require +1/+1 counters.

Corrupted Cards Opinion

New 18 May 2024 Asked by su92 48 Comments

I understand that MH3 wants to reference famous cards (and that's great!) but I'm getting a bit tired of the "Old card/character but corrupted" trope (referring to the Eldrazi versions). Maybe it's because we just had DMU, ONE *and* MOM do it just last year, or maybe I've played Magic for too long and I still remember SOM and SOI blocks doing that as well. What's the general opinion on this kind of cards?

They’re very popular.

Self-Imposed Poison Counters

New 13 Jan 2024 Asked by thunderweb 37 Comments

If/when: putting poison counters on myself, or caring about me having poison counters (Corrupted cares about 'opponents' only)

If. We tried it in Scars of Mirrodin block. It created an unfun tension.

Poison Mechanic Popularity

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by prosperity-post 60 Comments

Hi Mark, Why is poison sticking around? I don't think it's a good idea and after the Phyrexian sets, I would have thought it would have ended. Can't we be done with it like we were after SOM block?

Poison is actually very popular. The poison Commander deck was one of the most popular Commander decks of 2023. Also, while the Phyrexians are associated with poison, they are not the only ones that can have poison. The concept goes well beyond the Phyrexians.

Hardest Set Experience

New 20 Aug 2023 Asked by 3and4-fifthskitsune 31 Comments

Greetings Mark, requesting birthday trivia of the hardest but most rewarding set you've worked on so far. Also may you and the rest of R&D have a great rest of August! : )

The one I personally struggled the most with was Scars of Mirrodin. Happy Birthday!

Surprise Plane Reveals

New 03 Aug 2023 Asked by szwanger 50 Comments

You've talked many times about the original Scars of Mirrodin plan ending with a reveal of "Surprise! This plane is actually Mirrodin!" If/when on a similar "Surprise! This plane is actually _____" reveal in a future set?

I don’t think Magic is set up to do that kind of reveal well.

Oversized Cards Match

New 19 Jun 2023 Asked by sabotflask 29 Comments

Do you know if your match with Richard Garfield with oversized cards during Scars of Mirrodin block was filmed, and if the footage is available anywhere?

I do not believe it was filmed.

-1/-1 Counter Possibility

New 28 May 2023 Asked by somedaylily 58 Comments

Will we ever be able to put a -1/-1 counter on a creature in Standard (while you remain with WOTC)?

I think a set with punch out counters could consider using -1/-1 counters in moderation. By the way I’m not the force stopping -1/-1 counters. More the opposite actually. I’m the one who put them in Shadowmoor, Amonkhet, and Scars of Mirrodin blocks.

Watermarks in ONE

New 28 Jan 2023 Asked by project-two-five-zero-one 41 Comments

Was there any consideration given to using the Mirran/Phyrexian watermarks for ONE?

It was necessary in Scars of Mirrodin block to show the Phyrexian spread, which was tricky to see without an aid. Here it wouldn’t do much. We did talk about it.

Poison Mechanics Shift

New 20 Jan 2023 Asked by jarethbulge 21 Comments

Hey Maro! I remember when you discussed development of infect that one of your major goals was to make poison feel different than life totals and one of the way to do that was to make sure creatures that killed you with poison didn't kill you with damage first. Your article talks about the corrupted mechanic caring about partial poison and making it so poison doesn't have to be an all-in deck, but I'm curious if it also represents a shift away from treating poison as a dedicated alt-win condition. I'd love to hear more about the big-picture thinking about poison. Maybe a podcast? As a fan who joins you in having loved poison since legends I'm very excited to care about it in new and different ways! This set looks great!

I talk it a bit in this week’s podcast on the design of Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Poison in Scars of Mirrodin block was just too silo-ed.

Phyrexians vs Esper

New 19 Jan 2023 Asked by interrogatemarcusii 26 Comments

In the Scars of Mirrodin block, the Phyrexians were supposed to be represented by colored artifact creatures, but got beaten to the punch by Esper. With the current arc's focus on New Phyrexia, do you feel regret or relief about that?

Adaptation is key to designing Magic sets. Things often deviate from the early plans.

Phyrexian Watermark Reason

New 18 Jan 2023 Asked by monopurplecontraptions 42 Comments

Is there a specific reason the watermark no longer automatically goes on phyrexian cards like it used to?

That was just for Scars of Mirrodin block to show the spread of Phyrexia over the course of the block.

Phyrexian Arc Pace

New 17 Jan 2023 Asked by petruscaex 45 Comments

Mark, if I may: I understand that this Phyrexian Arc actually started back in Scars of Mirrodin, just as the Bolas' Arc kinda started back in Shards of Alara, but the "ignition point" of the Bolas' Arc felt for me something around Magic Origins, which give us like 4 years of stories, while the ignition point of this Phyrexian contlict feels like Kaldheim but it had a pause until Kamigawa came out, which gives us like 1,5 years worth of stories. Maybe if we had like 2 years of development of this part of the arc things wouldn't feel that rushed.

The Phyrexian storyline has been subtly building for many years. Maybe it was a little too subtle.

Secret NDA Revelation

New 25 Dec 2022 Asked by dndryan 63 Comments

what is a secret/nda in magic that was hard to keep for you that you can talk about now?

Poison coming back (in Scars of Mirrodin) after so many years (over a decade) was a hard one. I’d tried so many times to get poison back, that to finally do it was a huge thing, but then I had to sit on it for years.

Comparing Card Utilities

New 23 Nov 2022 Asked by kasim18-blog 35 Comments

Following up on the person talking about Wurmcoil Engine. in SOM, there were 22 cards I counted that could destroy/neutralize the 6/6 side for more than a turn, and none of them were crazy to consider. BRO has 17, and that is counting being able to meld either brother, which might happen a couple times total in BRO limited, and a Teferi ultimate. It's only 14 without those crazy long shots.

FYI

Phyrexians Story Setup

New 08 Sep 2022 Asked by trifas 29 Comments

When you say you were setting up this arc since Scars of Mirrodin do you mean beyond the fact that this was the block where current Phyrexians became a thing?

When we introduced the new Phyrexians (as opposed to the original Yawgmoth Phyrexians), we did intend to make use of them again, so we set some story elements into motion.

Phyrexia Arc Planning

New 07 Sep 2022 Asked by ravenjoybower 54 Comments

You mention often that you work a while ahead. Can you give us an idea of how long you've known this Phyrexia arc was coming? Around the release of which set?

We’ve been setting up this storyline since Scars of Mirrodin back in 2010.
