Restore Balance

Dread Wight Group Membership

With Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Dread Wight joins a select group of cards including Glory Seeker, Restore Balance, Stasis Cocoon, Void Shatter, etc. What qualifies a card for membership in this group?

I assume card names where all the words in the name are themself card names.

Understanding Richard Garfield PhD

Re Richard Garfield PhD, Living End is a suspend spell without a mana cost (like Crashing Footfalls, Restore Balance and the like), so It think the question is "are cards without a mana cost interchangeable with Richard Garfield?" I suppose another way to phrase the question is could you play a swamp as a mountain?

No. For starters, neither is cast and Richard swaps a spell as you cast it.

Color Pie Solutions

I enjoyed your column this week. Question: To accommodate formats that are being imbalanced by the color pie, I see three possible solutions: 1) Establish multiple color pies to handle different formats (sounds like a lot of work!); 2) increase the power level in the weaker colors (sounds risky!); or 3) invent your way out of the problem with new mechanics to restore balance (sounds creatively daunting!). Do you lean toward any of these, or are there better options that I'm missing?

We are working to find solutions within the existing color pie philosophies.

Un-rules Clarification

Un-rules question: For the purposes of Richard Garfield, zero CMC is not the same as no CMC (like on, say, Living End), correct? I cannot play a Memnite and turn it into Restore Balance, right?

That is correct - no mana cost is not the same as a mana cost of 0.
