Oko, Thief of Crowns

Issue with Reprinting Oko

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 61 Comments

I don't like the argument that because original Oko is at a higher rarity on a bonus sheet, it's impact in Limited is minimal so it's fine.

Not everyone plays on Magic Arena and does Limited events dozens of times. Some people only play Limited in paper a couple times or at a pre-release and it's extremely discouraging when the one or two times you play limited, you get bodied by a notoriously OP card that isn't even a mechanically new card.

Magic makes numerous different products, various products where they can reprint cards that aren't also used for Limited (i.e. collector boosters, FNM promos, Secret Lair, pre-constructed Commander decks) or even high powered reprint Masters sets that can be drafted.

I don't see why Oko needed to be in the Play Boosters and I thought the same about Ragavan in March of the Machine. If it's thematically important to release the reprint associated with the set, then why not just do it in collector boosters?

One thing I don't like about all of these bonus sheets is it means in nearly every limited environment with them, the best and most powerful cards are oftentimes old cards that I'd played with or against rather than the new cards I want to be excited for.

Querying Draft Test Process

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by outlawslimitedbad 36 Comments

Does the design team test drafting sets or do they just throw unstoppable bomb rares in a set and say good luck to whoever has to face Oko, thief of crowns in draft?

Set design and play design test the sets with all the cards including any bonus sheets.

Character Popularity

When a character's card is broken, does that reduce the character's popularity in storyline or chance of seeing the character return? For example, Oko, Thief of Crowns got banned in multiple formats -- did that make Oko less popular / less likely to get a new, more balanced card in a future set?

Powerful cards historically make a card more popular, not less.

Unstable Gameplay Query

If I'm playing Unstable against an opponent who has Animate Library out, and I use Spike, Tournament Grinder to bring out Oko, Thief of Crowns and turn their library into an Elk, does that take away the ability to draw from their deck? If so, does that mean they deck out?

You can’t take away the library’s libraryness.

Oko's Design Evaluation

Is Oko, Thief of Crowns a good example of adding in color abilites together in such a way as too overcome color weakness or is it an example of of playing in new design space and not getting costs perfect? I believe its the latter but most of my associates believe the former.

There’s nothing that Oko does that’s outside of blue and green’s portions of the color pie.
