Monocolor Precon Commander Decks

New 28 May 2024 Asked by little-lion-girl 41 Comments

I'd like to note that, aside from the W40K Necron deck, WotC hasn't released a monocolor precon in box stores in ten years with C14. I believe the Angels SL deck sold out quickly. Would another monocolor precon be completely out of the question based on ten year old data? Or was the Necrons deck significant for market research?

We are willing to do monocolor Commander decks, but they’re both harder to do and have a higher bar to clear.

Future of Universes Beyond

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by horizonsgift 31 Comments

RE: Universes beyond upgrades. I would like to upgrade my decks given time, but don’t want to break the frame design or art direction. I’d like it to feel cohesive. May I request that in the future we get a chance to say, add 10 cards to the Necron deck, or 10 cards to the Dr who decks, what have you.

It’s tricky to make more cards for a license because it needs to be in a licensed product. Secret Lair is the easiest place to do it, especially for a small number of cards.

Creature Type Equivalence

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by vedalkensamurai 28 Comments

Could two Universes Beyond creature types have the same Universes Within equivalent? E.g. could Necron and Dalek be the same creature type?Could a Universes Beyond creature type be equivalent to an existing Universes Within creature type? E.g. could Necron and Phyrexian be the same creature type?

The is currently uncharted space, so the best I can do is speculate. These answers are not definitive. My best guess is no to the first question and probably no to the second.

Creature Type Plans

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by lookoutscience 20 Comments

So far all the universes beyond cards brought onto The List have been normal magic creature types. But is there a plan to change them should they not be, like necron or time lord?

We will make a parallel creature type (meaning they’ll be treated the same by the rules) if need be.

Renaming in Universes Within

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by izzet-always-r-versus-u 31 Comments

If you were going to print a Universes Within version of, for instance, Mawloc (creature type Tyranid) or Triarch Praetorian (creature type Necron), you'd just rename the creature type the same way you'd rename the card, yes? (I remember this being answered at one point, but can't locate it, so a source I can cite would help a lot.)

Yes.

W40K Decks Feedback

New 25 Feb 2023 Asked by barreldogzilla 55 Comments

How are you Mark? How were the W40K commanders decks received? Any chance for us to see an in MTG version of some necron, astarte or tyranid popular card?

They were received well. There are no immediate plans to make in-universe Magic versions, but it’s something we can do if we find the right place for it.

Commander Pre-cons Praise

New 01 Jan 2023 Asked by revenchism 36 Comments

Hey mark, just want to say give a pat on the back to the people who made the commander Pre-cons for 40k. I got the opportunity to play necrons vs tyranids with someone dear to me this holiday season and it was some of the most fun we’ve had with magic in a long time.

I’ll pass along the compliment to the design team.

Universes Within Creature Types

New 12 Dec 2022 Asked by quantext 38 Comments

Theoretically if Warhammer 40k cards got a Universes Within version, would they retain creature types like Astartes or Necron that are originally from Warhammer 40k? Or would they be changed to something more Magic-like, such as human or skeleton?

Theoretically, we’d make a brand new, but mechanically equivalent, creature type.

Reprint Rule Reality

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by hitek1208 30 Comments

FYI: Darkness in the necron deck was also a reprint from legends. So even if it was a break, reprinting it in the commander deck doesn't break the rules of not printing breaks into new formats

Unearth Mechanic Coincidence

New 05 Oct 2022 Asked by turnonethoughtseize 33 Comments

Was there some tension in design putting Unearth on artifact monstrosities (based on the one card so far) in Brother's War so close to the Warhammer 40K Necron deck featuring Unearth on artifact monstrosities?

Each set was doing its own thing. Warhammer 40,000 was also originally a little farther away from Brothers’ War than currently in the schedule.

Warhammer 40k Typeline

New 13 Sep 2022 Asked by lykrast 90 Comments

If you were to print a magic version of one of the Warhammer 40k cards, it'll have to keep its typeline right? Does that mean magic will have its own "definition" of Tyranid/Astarte/Necron if needed?

If it ever came to this, here’s our current thinking: We would create a brand new creature type which would be swapped one for one with that IP-centric creature type. For example, all uses of <blah> in this Universes Beyond product will be <unique new creature type> if done in a Magic version. The <IP name> and <unique new creature type> would be one for one in the rules much like the names of the Godzilla skinned cards.

Skeleton Trivia

New 02 Aug 2022 Asked by the-last-gentleman 40 Comments

The day of my birthday has come, and so I can finally ask the big question. What. About. The. Skellys? I'm a commander player since 2015, and I'm pretty hyped for the new Warhammer commander decks since we'll finally have a (probably) skeleton commander with the Necron Dynasties, because having a (good) skeleton commander has been my dream since when I started playing EDH. Can you give us some Skeleton Trivia about Skeletons on Commander or in Magic in General? Thank you for everything, btw.

I believe the regeneration mechanic came about because Richard Garfield was trying to make Skeletons that kept coming back. Happy Birthday!
