Mana Acceleration Impact

New 11 Aug 2013 Asked by ingenkhoobor 10 Comments

In response to being asked about Diamonds/Signets/Mind Stone balanced against Thragtusk and Hellrider, you used the former as though they would be powering out the latter. Wouldn't putting the former in a set mean you wouldn't be printing the latter?

I was just trying to point out that mana acceleration isn’t just about itself but what it allows players to do faster.

Card Power in Standard

I want to know why Diamonds/Signets/Mind Stones are too powerful for standard but Thragtusk, Hellrider, and Burning-Tree Emmissary are fine? Is it because R&D want to make the standard format about nothing but the combat step?

I’m confused. You want your opponents casting the Thragtusks and Hellriders even sooner?

Development vs Design

Can you promise to never print cards like Restoration Angel, Snapcaster Mage, Thragtusk? If you have to print them, could you make the mana costs more realistic like you do to all the much worse, and much harder to cast cards like Ash Zealot, Geralf's Messenger, Hellrider? Power level vs Mana cost is really unbalanced and biased it feels.

You are asking development request of a designer. Costing’s not my gig.

Favorite Cards Inquiry

Love your blog! It's all... insightful and fantastic and things. Since you've been getting a lot of "who designed this" questions lately, do you know who designed Hellrider, Myr Battlesphere and Hellkite Charger? Those are my three favorite cards. And, um, a more substantial question of what your opinions of them are as well? Hellkite Charger and Bear Umbra are from the same block, and I'm curious, was that combo planned or often used in testing? sorry for all the questions, stay awesome!!

Hellrider was probably made by myself or someone on my Dark Ascension design team (Jenna Helland, Zac Hill, Graeme Hopkins & Matt Tabak), Myr Battlesphere was made by Aaron Forsythe and Hellkite Charger was made by Ken Nagle or someone on his Archenemy design team (Kelly Digges, Aaron Forsythe, Dave Guskin & Mons Johnson). My favorite of them is the Myr Battlesphere but the other two seem like fun cards. I don’t think the combo was planned.
