Felidar Sovereign

Winning Card Preferences

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by anookee 28 Comments

Do you have any thoughts on the difference between cards that outright say "win the game" vs cards that effectively win the game (I.E. Felidar Sovereign vs Aetherflux Reservoir, Door to Nothingness vs Sawnspire of Ulamog, etc.). I've always been partial to the latter. Thanks : )

R&D, as a whole, also leans towards the latter.

Solutions for White

New 27 Oct 2018 Asked by hopeless-knight 65 Comments

A few of the main reasons white is so wimpy in EDH though is its considerable lack of Landramp and Card Draw, along with a lifegain mechanic that becomes weak when everyone has 40 life. Dawn of Hope tackles some of those problems with card draw and lifeain but... how else can you help it's other flaws? White also has no manner of winning on it's own turn through one spell. it's most common Win Cons are just accumulated value or stuff like felidar sovereign, and that paints a target on you.

We’re actively working on solutions, but it’s about white finding white ways to win, not white acting like other colors.

Alternate Win Conditions

New 04 May 2016 Asked by mydrel-kyenshi 32 Comments

Is 1 alternate lose/win condition per set going to be the norm going forward, after Demonic pact in Origins, Felidar Sovereign in BFZ, Hedron Alignment in OGW, and Triskaidekaphobia in SOI, or is this just an anomaly?

We tend to do no more than one, unless it’s a mechanic, as a default, but we don’t always have one.

A good example.

Future Unicorn Cards

New 15 Dec 2015 Asked by thornthallid 119 Comments

Is there a decent chance of making occasional splashy rare/mythic unicorns in the future? I feel they are done a great disservice generally. Whenever I look at Felidar Sovereign for example, I think it would have made a sweet unicorn.

I agree that we’ve underserved Unicorns.

Felidar Sovereign Rarity

How come felidar sovereign dropped down to just a rare?

We felt players would be unhappy to get it as a mythic rare.

Art Reprint Choices

New 18 Sep 2015 Asked by ilgreven 35 Comments

Were Felidar Sovereign and Dragonmaster Outcast added late in development, or is their having the same art as their original printing an aesthetic thing (perhaps because we won't be getting same-art reprints in core sets ever again)?

With the absence of the core sets, we are looking for places where beautiful art can return. The current plan is if the old art is very good and makes sense in the new set we will consider reprinting the art.

Flexibility vs Templating

New 11 Sep 2015 Asked by dkirzane 23 Comments

Felidar Sovereign could say "when you have 20 more than your starting life" or "double your starting life" instead of "40 life." What are your preferences regarding potentially inelegant templating in exchange for greater flexibility in different formats (e.g. Commander)?

It would have to be a different card is we functionally change it.

Reusing Art Discussion

New 11 Sep 2015 Asked by sigmasonicx 89 Comments

Felidar Sovereign has the same art as its original printing, despite this being a new expert expansion. Is this something we should expect more of in the future, now that core sets are gone?

Yes, one of the things we realized with the core set leaving was there was no longer a way for us to reprint cards with art we liked. So we decided that if the old art makes sense in the creative of the world it’s being reprinted in that we will start giving ourselves the option of reusing the art.

Alt Win Preference

Do you prefer artifacts with alt win conditions or color specific cards like Felidar sovereign Etc?

I like all alt win cards. They should exist in artifacts *and* every color.
