Ember Shot

Design Playability

In design, are all cards supposed to be playable? If yes, then why were cards like Ember Shot, Flamecast Wheel, and Zephyr Spirit created?

All cards have a purpose. Not all cards are playable in all formats or by all level of players.

Cipher Card Costs

Following up, I actually said Last Thoughts was a "slightly better" Curiosity, not strictly worse. I'm not bothered about its power. What I was getting at is Curiosity costs U and we're paying 3 for a cantrip, which is probably the most a cantrip has cost since Ember Shot. I'm curious why R&D was so conservative here when, unlike other ciphers, this is a combination of very familiar effects. Did the Curiosity comparison not come up?

The development was well aware of Curiosity. Why was the card 3U instead of 2U? Because the development team has learned that it is dangerous to push card drawers. We do every once in a while but it has burned us more than just about any other type of card.

Grizzly Bear Underestimate

Yeah, he's definitely underestimating the grizzlies. You don't wanna mess with a bear! ...unless you have an ember shot, that is.

Fodder Cards Opinion

New 14 May 2012 Asked by danvogelsong 12 Comments

I don't think of Fodder cards as those cards perceived as bad because they don't fit into a certain paradigm. For example - The Shrines, Pure reflection, Lion's Eye Diamond, Steamflogger Boss, Death Mutation, Forge Armor, Cloven casting - these are all considered bad cards unless they're used in a way that is not normal. But there's no reason for Ember Shot to exist. It's Fodder. It's useless. I genuinely hate that card.

If I can produce players that like Ember Shot (hint, hint), will you stop hating it?
