Ebon Praetor

Non-Phyrexian Praetor Query

New 16 Nov 2022 Asked by lizardwizard100 68 Comments

Hey Mark, I noticed that there are two non-phyrexian creatures that have the “Praetor” subtype: “Ebon Praetor” and “Sanguine Praetor” (both of which have the supertype “Avatar”). Could you please explain why these exist, as I was under the impression that “Praetor” is a Phyrexian-exclusive subtype? To me it feels very out-of-place… sort of like seeing a “Creature — Eldrazi Citizen”…!

Praetor is an English word. It’s not exclusive to Phyrexians.

Reserved List Logic

What are the possible reasons a card ended up on the reserved list? Because while cards like the power 9 and other horribly overpowered cards, ante cards, and weird things like Shahrazad and Chaos Orb makes sense, there's also cards like Urza's Miter, Weakstone, a whole bunch of Legends legends, and Ebon Praetor on there that are not overpowered (a lot of them are underpowered, though) nor completely unfitting in modern rules.

80% of all rares of the affected sets were put on the Reserved List. (Note: I’m doing this from memory so 80% might not be exact, but it’s close if it isn’t.) To answer the next question, R&D picked which 20% didn’t go on the list.
