Sticker Name Concerns

New 01 Aug 2022 Asked by theothin 35 Comments

Name stickers can cause certain cards to have identical names to other cards - for example, the "Dark" sticker could go on the card Betrayal to make its name the same as Dark Betrayal. Were there any concerns about this?

While stickers can do this, the actual ramification is pretty limited. For starters, you can only sticker nonland permanents you own, and you only have 30% chance at having a certain name (in constructed events). On top of that, the mechanical implications are minimal. So, we’re not overly concerned.EDIT: This is actually Jess Dunks’ call, so I was premature to make a ruling on it. I apologize.

Removing Poison Counters

New 29 Jul 2019 Asked by shiggymegamitiggy 35 Comments

Doesn't Price of Betrayal remove poison counters? Or is that okay because it's opponent-only and you're not likely to want to remove an opponent's poison?

We allow you to remove poison counters from opponents because you’re highly disincentivized from actually doing so. This is so you can remove things like energy counters.

Standard Irrelevant Text

New 21 Apr 2019 Asked by kycygni3 40 Comments

We now have at least 3 cards in standard -- SunCleanser, Nahiri, & Price of Betrayal, that have irrelevant text on them compared to the set they were released in. I appreciate that you attempt to branch out and design cards in a larger context, and I understand it's just free power on top of what the cards already do, but I think I'm of the opinion now that it's just too weird. I would have vetoed these cards were I on the team and suggested to wait until the whole text were relevant.

Constructed is a very popular way to play Magic. : )

Hey Mark, have you written anything on cooperative and pseudo cooperative games? (Pandemic, Forbidden Island / Forbidden Desert, Betrayal at House on the Hill)

I have not.

Minotaur Representation

New 13 Jun 2016 Asked by sukusuku-hakutaku 47 Comments

The new art for Carbonize has a minotaur being killed gruesomely. In addition, they are the victim in various other cards, including, but not limited to, Anchor to the Aether, Razor Boomerang, Ghostly Prison, Serra Bestiary, Smite, Backslide, Fleeting Distraction, Void Snare, Dark Betrayal, Hand to Hand, and Lightning Blast. Whenever it's a minotaur, it almost feels like it goes further than normal. Minotaurs themselves are an infrequent creature type. Is there a reason to the disparity?

Minotaurs just take abuse well. : )

Dark Betrayal Analysis

Dark Betrayal is awesome, even if it does break the colour pie a bit. Good to see there are massive flavour hits that aren't explicitly tied to mythology as well

Black has plenty of history killing black creatures. Just because some of its kill spells don’t work against black doesn’t mean others don’t.
