Zodiac Monkey

Monkey Type Update

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by chorocojo 31 Comments

Zodiac Monkey and Tree Monkey were both reprinted in 9th edition because at the time they were the only Monkeys in Magic. Ninth Edition was when creature types would only be updated if cards were reprinted and this let yall remove Monkey as a type and roll them into Ape.

Do you know why Zodiac Monkey was given a reprint in 9th edition but the other Zodiac creatures never got one? It seems weird that a cycle wouldn't be reprinted together.

We reprint cards out of cycles all the time.

Monkey Type Trivia

Hello! Can I request birthday trivia on the Monkey creature type?

Monkey, as a creature type, first appeared in Portal: Second Age on Tree Monkey. It then appeared in Portal: Three Kingdoms on Zodiac Monkey. Both were errataed to Ape in Ninth Edition, but returned to Monkey when Wild Bandar brought the Monkey type back in Kaladesh. Happy Birthday!

Monkey Typing History

"Monkey as a creature type is very new." Technically, Tree Monkey and Zodiac Monkey were monkeys when they were first printed (They got errata into apes in 9ED, and back into monkeys when Kaladesh is out).

Fair point.

Why wasnt zodiac monkey reprinted in born of the gods?

Because we thought we’d stick with the whole Greek mythology thing we started in Theros. : )
