Card Bendiness Rules

RE: Reckless Endeavor and Star of Extinction and bendiness. How about Blasphemous Act?

I believe that’s the card that created the new 6 point cap rule.

Red's Power Limits

Is reckless endeavor a pie break for red, since it can deal significantly more than 6 damage without being an X spell? The question goes for Star of extinction

Reckless Endeavor is a bend. Star of Extinction is somewhere from a strong bend to a break.

Red's Spell Limits

With Red no longer having access to big damage spells (excluding X costed ones) does that mean that cards like Star of Extinction are no longer in Red's wheelhouse?

Not without consciously making a bend.

Bend vs. Break

In your article today you talked about Star of Extinction being more of a bend than a break. Does this mean your stance has changed on Blasphemous Act? I seem to remember you disliking it for being such a high amount of damage.

It’s not something I regularly want us to do. Is it okay as a very infrequent thing on a flavorful card? Yes, as it’s not undercutting red’s core weaknesses.

Ixalan Dinosaurs Fate

Do the dinosaurs of Ixalan get wiped out a la star of extinction or is that just a flavor card?

It’s just flavor. They’re okay.

Dinosaur Resilience

How is it that Hour of Devastation, the marquee card the set is named around, is less devastating than Star of Extinction, which isn't even a story spotlight?

The Dinosaurs are a heartier bunch. : )

Red's Removal Power

New 14 Sep 2017 Asked by longtimegonemtgo 68 Comments

You have previously said that you felt that red doing so much damage that it amounted to hard removal was a mistake, and cited Blasphemous Act as an example of what red should not be doing. Does Star of Extinction represent a change in your mind on this, or just something that slipped past? Thanks.

It’s a bend we did because the flavor was so darling. It’s not something we plan to do often.

Star of Extinction Query

New 05 Sep 2017 Asked by hellogeneraltacobouquet 663 Comments

Speaking of star of extinction, isn't it a color pie break? I thought Red wasn't supposed to get Shivan meteor-levels of damage based removal anymore. (because killing fatties is supposed to be hard for red)

Red can get it if it pays for it. For example, red can kill a high toughness creature with an X spell. We decided that seven mama was enough mana.

Unlike that asker, I like Star of Extinction a lot because it carries the flavor you were clearly going for with it. Takes mythic and makes me feel it.

Ixalan's Dinosaur Theme

New 04 Sep 2017 Asked by nerdyhologrampizza 54 Comments

I'm liking ixalan but Star of Extinction irks me. Oh look! Dinosaurs in this fictional world are destroyed in exactly the same way as in the real world! Too on the nose. Too "look everybody! Dinosaurs! Asteroids! Get it?" Grumble grumble

The next game the Dinosaurs are alive again. : )
