Commander Format Concerns

New 23 Dec 2022 Asked by benbuzz790-blog 55 Comments

Hi Mark - the commander format grew and is loved by many who played cards that by-and-large were designed for standard. As nice as it is to get new commanders and to shore up weak colors, printing directly for commander fundamentally changes the qualities of the commander card pool. You can see how printing directly for a format can have large consequences: see modern horizons. Are you concerned that printing directly to commander will have similar effects such as homogenization of the format?

I think our focus on it, has actually made more viable strategies, not less.

Perspective On Tribal Spells

Why is R&D's current perspective on the tribal spells, and the reasons they don't want to make them in premier sets?I personally love them as they help shore up weaker tribes with useful abilities. Especially in EDH/Commander. And they help give a flavorful touch to a spell. For example. This kind of spell is typically goblin or merfolk magic.

Tribal’s failing is it really needs to be all or nothing and all’s too much. It just doesn’t matter enough.

Blue's Access to Transformation

Hey, Mark, just wanted to say how happy I am that R&D finally came around on transformation not being a good excuse for blue to have access to creature destruction. Not only did it shore up a loophole, but the blue transformation spells you've been making in their stead have been wonderful.

I too am happy with that change.

Color Weakness Philosophy

In my opinion lignify and song of the dryads are a green way to solve greens weaknesses. I'm personally an advocate for letting colors shore up their weaknesses if they do it in a way that is flavorful to their color.

Letting colors “shore up their weaknesses” is removing their weaknesses. It’s bad for the game for colors not to have weaknesses.

Force of Will Question

why DID FoW need the life loss clause? It seems like such an inconsequential change. To shore up aggro matchups?

Are you asking why we weakened one of the most powerful Counterspells (if not the most powerful) of all time? : )
