Ideas for Future Set Cards

Hello Mark, do you think we will see any more cards like Shield of Kaldra or Eye of Ugin that hint about what is to come in future sets?

I do.

Forward-Calling Cards

New 26 Jan 2020 Asked by mgmegadog 34 Comments

I've realized that one of the few things I am going to miss about the existence of blocks is the "cards that call forward specific card names that will later on be in the same limited environment" thing: Renowned Weaponsmith, Godpharaoh's Gift, Shield of Kaldra and the like. Will there ever be a way for things like this to show up again in some form or other?

We can still make call-forwards, but they won’t be in the same limited environment.

Spoiling Card Names

What other times have you spoiled a card's name in the set before it's released?

Helm of Kaldra from Fifth Dawn showed up in the rules text of Shield of Kaldra in Darksteel. And Goldmeadow Harrier from Lorwyn was in the rules text of Goldmeadow Lookout on a futureshifted card in Future Sight. Those are the two off the top of my head.

Card Modification Limits

To what extent are you able to modify cards at times later than they would typically be modified? For example, suppose during Fifth Dawn development, you wanted to change the total amount of mana needed to summon Kaldra. Would you have any ability to go back and tweak the mana cost of Sword/Shield of Kaldra? Or are cards form a set completely set in stone by the time Development of a later set begins?

The fall set is mostly in stone by the time development is working on the third set especially if it’s a small set.

Future Card References

Any chance of seeing more cards in the future that reference cards that haven't been printed yet? (Like Shield of Kaldra referencing Helm of Kaldra)

I’m sure we’ll do it again. I’m a big fan of the practice.

Card Foreshadowing

How do you feel about foreshadowing cards like you did with Shield of Kaldra?

I enjoy it quite a bit.

Card Naming Importance

New 03 Sep 2012 Asked by affinityforanime 0 Comments

Besides the handful of cards that specifically reference the names of other cards in their text boxes (ie: Shield of Kaldra), from a mechanical standpoint, why do cards have to have unique names? (This is a follow up to my question about why double-faced cards can't have the same name on both sides.)

There are a number of reasons but I’ll go with one of the most practical ones. I fill out a decklist. It’s important that card names have a one-to-one correlation with card power so that there is only one possible card for each name I write down.
