Render Silent

Multicolor Mana Costs

The last cards be printed in a standard legal expansion with lopsided, multicolor mana costs were Advent of the Wurm, Gaze of Granite, and Render Silent, all in Dragon's Maze. Is this something that R&D has made a conscious choice to stop doing? If so, why?

It’s something we only tend to do in two-color multicolor blocks, the last of which was Return to Ravnica block.

Land Destruction Fun

I've heard it said that wizards doesn't print much good land destruction because it isn't fun. But neither are counterspells. And does being on the receiving end of Render Silent really sound fun? It basically takes away an entire turn, which is a heck of a lot worse than a simple stone rain.

If you think we haven’t also given the “weakening treatment” to counterspells, you are simply unaware of Magic history. Counterspells have fallen off quite a bit powerwise since, well, Counterspell.
