New Directions in Card Draw

New 16 Apr 2021 Asked by petruscaex 30 Comments

Mark, we're seeing the first results of the experiments with card draw in White, but what about the old possibilities for card draw available to the color? Can White still draw multiple cards if associated with narrow strategies like we've seen in Puresteel Paladin and Sage's Reverie?

We’re shifting in some new directions.

White Card Draw and Mentor

Mark, you've previously stated that white card draw is ok for things that are white specialties and have also stated that small creatures is white's primary gig. In that case, why is Mentor of the Meek a break? It feels akin to Kor Spirtdancer, Puresteel Paladin or Sram, Senior Edificer? Is it more about crossing with green abilities?

We have crafted a philosophy of what differentiates white card draw from other colors’ card draw. I plan to go into more detail when we start seeing the cards that reinforce this new philosophy. The key is creating a series of draw effects that aren’t just replicating other colors’ effects. “Draw whenever you do a white thing” is not the philosophy we are following.

White Card Draw Limits

Sram, Senior Edificer: haven't you said in the past that white cards like Mentor of the Meek and Puresteel Paladin were mistakes? If this is a mistake, I'll take it. Also: high five to whomever for designing Fatal Push, the best eternal-format removal spell printed since Path to Exile.

We’ve decided to let White have very narrow directed card drawing. It can draw cards if it’s deck is narrowly focused on doing one thing.

Repeatable Draw Opinion

You mentioned that you feel like Mentor of the Meek was a mistake. What about Puresteel Paladin? It's a little less powerful, but still very abusable.

I do not feel repeatable draw cards should appear in White.

Card Draw Exceptions

How do you explain Mesa Enchantress (also printed outside of Planar Chaos), Kor Spiritdancer, Puresteel Paladin and Mentor of the Meek? Color pie violations, or color pie of the past that has since changed?

Card drawing is pretty basic so even being fifth means you get a little.
