Art Interpretation of Phthisis

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by eightbears 31 Comments

The art for Phthisis has a bright line going through it to presumably symbolize the passage of time, it being a suspend card, but I'm curious, at one point was it a Split Second card? Kind of reassembles the art direction on those.

Go look at all the suspend cards. The art gag is that you see the spell crossing between time periods.

Infect Mechanic Flavor

Is the flavour of Infect inherently tied to Phyrexians and phthisis or could it be used by someone/something else?

It could show up elsewhere. Likewise, we could see the Phyrexians without infect.

Card Name Complexity

In your New New World Order article you mentioned the complexity of pronunciation when selecting Card Names. It appears that this is actually a consideration in New World Order with what Ethan Fleischer writes in his You Make the Card column: "Do keep your names pronounceable. You can use unusual words, but they should have a clear pronunciation." Would a card with a name like Phthisis have a hard time seeing print today under NWO?

I’m not sure names are technically a New World Order thing although it does come from a similar place which is not causing confusion.

Phthisis Pronunciation

FYI for fellow readers, since there was some confusion in the comments: Phthisis is pronounced Tie-Sis (assuming you're going with the same pronunciation as in English), and in the story line it showed up as a disease caused by radiation from the Powerstone and Meekstone (discovered by Yawgmoth in his early days!)

Phthisis Card Delay

Given its importance in the story, why did it take until Time Spiral for a Phthisis card to be made?

It’s a difficult word to pronounce.
