Unstable Draft Fun

New 09 Oct 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 39 Comments

I drafted Unstable last night, and it was some of the most fun with Magic I’ve had in a while. My opponent round 1 was a good friend; they cast Photo Op to get Enter the Dungeon. While I’m that subgame, I cast Tug of War to start another. Later, I helped someone hide a Clown Robot token for the Surprise Party that I passed them. Can you distribute the highest of fives to the design team?

Will do. : )

Coaching at Photo Op

New 29 Sep 2022 Asked by extremecolourtyphoon 34 Comments

Coaching is unallowed for Photo Op, but is it unsporting if I go through the #GuessThatMagicCard tag and tell strangers that they look like Sol Ring, Tolarian Academy, Spike Tournament Grinder, etc?

Feel free to make whatever guesses you like. It just can’t be prompted by the poster.

Photo Op Flexibility

New 28 Sep 2022 Asked by 422templar 15 Comments

Hi Mark, for Photo Op, do you have to use a picture of yourself? I’d greatly prefer to not have to put pictures of myself onto the internet if at all possible.

No, it can be a picture of someone else you know posing.

Rules on Photo Op

New 25 Sep 2022 Asked by addictivemeh 40 Comments

Hi Mark! Pretty certain I know what the answer is gonna be, but just for clarity in case it comes up: on Photo Op, it just says that you may reveal a reply posted today with a guess. Can you be the one who posted the reply?

No, someone else has to reply.A good rule of thumb, if it feels like you’re cheating, you’re probably cheating.

Photo Op Requirements

New 25 Sep 2022 Asked by sigmasonicx 30 Comments

Does Photo Op necessarily have to be posted publicly on Twitter, or can you post it privately so only your friends can see?

It needs to be posted on social media, but it doesn’t have to be posted publicly. (You do have to show it and the response to your opponent.)

Photo Op Playtesting

New 25 Sep 2022 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 31 Comments

How did you playtest cards like Photo Op without revealing you were working on Unfinity before it was announced? Did you all just bypass the requirement or are there cosplay photos of different R&D members out there that I missed?

We took some photos and asked Wizards folks what they thought it was.

Photo Op Rules

New 25 Sep 2022 Asked by j-waffles 50 Comments

Photo op says to post the picture and hashtag with no other text. Does that include my username? Could I change my twitter handle to be “please say ancestral recall”?

If you’re doing something that feels like cheating, it’s cheating.

Photo Op Timing

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by exclusionmage 16 Comments

For photo op, how long before the game can the photo be taken/posted. I'm guessing it's supposed to be posted right before the game, but can it be an old photo? Does it have to be one I've never posted before?

It’s supposed to be posted that day, but you can reuse an old photo.

Outside Game Effects

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by aeonfrolicker 33 Comments

question about "outside the game" effects in un-sets like spike and photo op: generally the convention is to only have these interact with sideboards, even in limited, but is there an exception for un-cards? as far as i can tell spike is fully dead in limited if you can only grab cards you drafted with her for example

At the Unstable LRR PRR, someone used Spike to get a Shahrazad, so please have fun getting whatever.

Unfinity Photo Op Rule

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by allhailseagullia 22 Comments

Loving the Unfinity spoilers so far!For "photo op", it specifies a card outside the game, which traditionally would need to be in your draft/sealed pool. Is that still the case for unfinity, or should I start practicing my ragavan impression?I'll be playing in the Unfinity events in Vegas, looking forward to it!

The intent is it’s a “wish”, so however your local store does that.

Personal Photo Op

Do you intend to do your own Photo Op, just in case ? =)

If I ever get one in a draft, definitely.

Photo Op Legality

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by jericuboritox 28 Comments

What's the legality ruling of making a twitter post with Photo Op, then asking someone outside of Twitter to reply with a specific card so you can cast it?

That’s cheating.

Photo Op Mechanics

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by decynicalrevolt 17 Comments

With Photo Op, do you need to own the card in general,or is it like other draft formats where it can only find cards in your draft pool (in sanctioned unfinity)?

It’s like a Wish. You can find any card you have access to, and someone guessed in reply to your post.

Photo Op Cheating

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by drecon84 39 Comments

The Reddit thread for Photo Op is completely filled with people who want to use it to cheat. Was this expected?

Will people suggest ways to cheat? Yes. Does that mean it’s okay to cheat? No.

Photo Op Accessibility

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by thornthallid 48 Comments

Hi Mark,As someone who doesn't use social media (with the exception of following a handful of Tumblr blogs obviously), Photo Op is essentially a card I'm unable to use, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Was this a concern at all when the card was pitched?

Part of Magic’s customizability is that it lets players choose which cards work best for how they want to play. Not every card is for every player, and because players get to build their own decks, the game doesn’t require they use cards that, for whatever reason, aren’t appropriate for how they play. We understood when we made Photo Op, that some portion of players might not be able or want to play it, but we felt that didn’t mean nobody should have access to the effect as it’s a lot of fun. As I often talk about, you design cards for the players that will enjoy it that design, not the ones who won’t.

Photo Op Cosplay

does Photo Op allow for the cosplay of the card you're imitating, or should the photo posted be plain clothes?

Cosplay encouraged.
