Hyalopterous Lemure

Lemure Naming History

After Hyalopterous Lemure came back a Lemur, why wasn't the name changed?

I’m not even sure the creative team existed at the time to catch it.

Lemure vs Lemur

If for some reason you found yourselves reprinting Hyalopterous Lemure with new artwork, would the new artwork show a lemure or a lemur?

I would show a lemure attacking a lemur.

Flavor Text Timing

Did the Hyalopterous Lemure flavor text come before or after the art? Or more generally, when is flavor text finalized usually?

Flavor text, with a few exceptions like Gorilla Titan, always comes after the art.

Lemure Art Mix-up

What is the deal with the "Hyalopterous Lemure" art? How did it get past the sketch stage? Once it was finished, was it too late to make a correction? Or were the WOTC people amused enough to let it slide?

The artist misunderstood lemure (a ghost) and thought it was a lemur. I don’t think there was a sketch stage back then otherwise it would have been caught.

Unknown Card Stories

Got any other cool "did you know" stories like the Hyalopterous Lemure or Whippoorwill ones? Doesn't have to be art related.

Tons.  Goblin Scouts was designed as Dwarven Scouts. It made ½ creatures rather than 1/1 with mountainwalk. The art came back with goblins rather than dwarves so we had to change the card.

Card Art Misses

That Hyalopterous Lemure thing is pretty hilarious. You got any more examples of card art misses?

I love that Whippoorwill (from The Dark) is a bird shown in its art in mid-flight yet doesn’t fly.

Artist's Misinterpretation

Is it just me, or is Hyalopterous Lemure the most bizarre black-borded card ever printed? Did the artist just not know the difference between a "Lemur" and a "Lemure", and did Wizards just say, "whatever, we'll use it!", or was the art intended to be that way? Either way it's my favorite Magic card and I can't explain why

It’s my favorite artist miss. My other favorite got caught at sketch stage. The artist was told to show a lightning bolt hitting a drake. He drew a duck. : )
