Go for the Throat

Black Removal Power

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 45 Comments

In recent years (especially now with the printing of Cyber Conversion) I've been thinking black has really been falling behind in its creature removal powers. I keep finding myself rather running things like Resculpt or Reality Shift than Doomblade, Go for the Throat, Infernal Grasp and other black removal. Do you think black needs to to experience a similar power creep in removal or do you think it should stay about at this level?

Are black decks splashing other colors for creature removal?

Costing Diverse Cards

Why does Reach of Shadows cost 4B when it's very close to Go For The Throat, which cost 1B? What's so different about the cards that makes them cost such drastically different amounts?

One card was created for limited play and the other for constructed play. Also, the very nature of trading card games is that for any effect there are cards across the spectrum of power level. Every card is not, and should not, be pushed power level wise.

Enchantment Block Strategy

Would you tone down targeted removal in an Enchantments-matter block to make the main drawback of Auras be of less impact? Would you consider doing something like "destroy target creature that's not enchanted" similar to how Ultimate Price / Victim of Night / Go for the Throat worked in their respective blocks?

I agree that enchantment blocks have the job of figuring out how to make auras more relevant than normal. Your solution is one possibility but there are others that would also work.

Playtest Names

I was wondering about playtest names. What is the oddest/gnarliest playtest name you've heard of? I've heard a rumor that Go For the Throat was called "Kick in the nuts," or some equivalent.

We tend to get a little silly with our playtest names. The current trend started by Zac Hill is to make playtest names that are ten words long.

Go For the Throat Logic

Can you please explain how it's possible for Go For the Throat to destroy Headless Skaab? Headless Skaab doesn't even have a throat!

It’s the same way that Remove Soul works on Soulless One.
