Class-Changing Items

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by cerezawrites 28 Comments

Is there a specific reason why more auras or equipment like Dub and Captain's Hook don't change creature classes? There are axes that react to warriors entering the battlefield or using them, but no specific effect to BECOME a Warrior. And most "general" type change effects are Blue (Arcane Adaptations, Xenograft, etc), limiting use outside of Blue.

It’s mostly a memory issue. If we do it too much, it becomes harder to track.

Future Sight as an Un-set

New 13 Oct 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 48 Comments

Hey Mark! I’m building an Un-cube. Would you say that Future Sight is Un enough to be considered?

It’s your cube. I did dub Future Sight the “third Un-set” at the time.

"We’ve moved away from what we dub “gimmick sets”. " even as supplemental sets?

Yes. They are hard to make and don’t play as well.

Astrotorium Lore Details

New 02 Oct 2022 Asked by chefwhatnot 45 Comments

Were there any significant/interesting lore details about Myra the Magnificent’s Intergalactic Astrotorium of Fun that weren’t able to make it into the flavor text? I really like the setting of Unfinity and want to learn more about it.

I recorded a podcast with Ari (upcoming) where we talk about the flavor of the park and dub it canon.

Hello Mark, where would you put an all creature set (like Legions) on the storm scale?

A 10. We’ve moved away from what we dub “gimmick sets”.

Hi Mark!, My girlfriend and I were wondering, what is in Squee's hand in the cards: Squee, Dubious Monarch; Squee, the Immortal and maybe in Squee, Goblin Nabob. Best

That’s Squee’s Toy.

Set Designs and Player Reception

I also feel the need to point out the difference between people who enjoy [mixing sci-fi and fantasy] and people who are indifferent to it, but enjoy the cards *mechanically* and will buy them simply because they are good cards. I sincerely do hope that WotC acknowledges that a set selling well doesn't automatically mean that it was well-received. I feel that Kamigawa NEO is well-designed mechanically but dislike the modern-day and sci-fi technology aspects of the flavour.

If a set sells well, and does well in market research, and gets played a lot by all the metrics we can measure, and gets talked about a lot through the many metrics we can measure, we dub that a success. We understand that not every product is optimized for every player, and there are things that some players love that other players are neutral about (and yet others hate), but when something does well in all our metrics, we assume there’s a significant portion of that audience that enjoyed what we made.

Stance on Gimmick Sets

New 03 Jan 2021 Asked by moonsliceman 43 Comments

Alara Reborn was a pretty unique set, being fully multicolored. How did that go over? Any chance of another set having a stipulation as pervasive through as Alara Reborn had it? Not necessarily multicolored, just anything.

We dub those “gimmick sets” (every card’s a creature, every card is multicolor, etc.) we’ve chosen to stop doing them. They tend to add restrictions that don’t lead to better designs.
