Dragon Hatchling

Lost Wings of Manticores

""Red doesn’t get fliers with two exceptions, Dragons and Phoenixes. Dragon Hatchling is a Dragon, so it’s okay. Note, we don’t make a lot of baby Dragons. " Why did Manticores have to loose their wings?Fine, three exceptions. " No, seriously, Manticores lost their wings. They used to have them in magic, but more recent ones don't have them. I was legitimately wondering why.

Probably because red doesn’t get a lot of fliers.

Fine, three exceptions.

Red's New Small Fliers

Red isn't supposed to get [new] small fliers, so does that mean Dragon Hatchling is relegated to supplemental sets instead of being printable for standard?

No Dragon Eggs

Can you explain the lack of dragon egg or dragon hatchling in dragons of tarkir?

The flavor of dragon tempests was they come forth full born. You have to ask Doug for as to why.

Dragon Growth Flavor

New 13 Jul 2013 Asked by veloxiraptor 22 Comments

Why does Dragon Egg hatch into a 2/2 in the same set that features Dragon Hatchling, an 0/1? Seems like a flavor disconnect there...

Think of it as coming out as a 0/1 and then there’s a video montage of it starting to grow up ending with it becoming a 2/2. The actual answer is sometimes we make choices because it is better gameplay even if slightly worse flavor.

Dragon Hatchling Discussion

How do you feel about Dragon Hatchling in the color pie? 2-drop common flier in red? I mean yeah, it's a baby dragon, but still.

Red isn’t supposed to have efficient small fliers. I don’t mind baby dragons but I don’t want them pushed powerwise.

Dragons at Lower Rarities

What are your thoughts on Dragon Hatchling and Furnace Whelp in M13? Should there be dragons at common and uncommon?

I’m not fond of taking splashy rare iconics and making smaller versions of uncommons with them. That said, the baby dragon is a fantasy staple so I’m willing to make an exception as long as we don’t do it too much.

Hornet Sting Sentiment

New 06 Jun 2012 Asked by magic-chan 5 Comments

If I use an Hornet Sting to get rid of a Dragon Hatchling, does it make you happier or more sad?

Whenever a player uses a Hornet Sting, I am sad. While I don’t like the iconics being made smaller and less rare, I do understand that the dragon whelp is an iconic fantasy trope. As long as it’s done very infrequently I can get behind a baby dragon.

Iconic Cards Decision

"There is not a lot to gain of making wimpy version of awesome iconic" You said this a couple months ago, could you please explain Dragon hatchling and why this "wimpy" dragon exists?

Let’s just leave it at I don’t make all the decisions. (Hornet Sting, I’m looking at you.)

Iconic Creatures Discussion

Now, I'm all for what you're talking about with this whole "iconic creature" thing, but do feel a little ill-timed in your argument that these critters stick to higher rarities the day Dragon Hatchling gets spoiled and Angels/Demons are all over AVR? (I understand that these are limited and unique situations, but it still seems a little awkward).

We are a game that breaks its own rules when it makes sense. Normally angels are only rare. When we make an “angel set” we will do things like make a common angel. But just because we purposefully break are own rules for purpose doesn’t mean the rules aren’t important in the first place.

Low-Cost Dragons

Is it possible to make a dragon that makes sense at only one or two mana? Dragon whelp, a dragon hatchling, is the cheapest dragon at four mana. I've always wanted more cute little dragons.
