Balancing Act

Mono Colored Planeswalkers

Could we see more mono coloured planeswalkers or see those less frequently seen better used? I find that I often get character fatigue

It’s a balancing act between having a lot of variety for players like you and enough repetition for the players that like seeing their favorites show up frequently enough.

World-Building Depth

You mentioned that all players need to easily "get" what a world is about. Fair point. It's a balancing act, though, because in a continuing series (like Magic) where there's no end in sight, if you don't develop your worlds and your characters beyond "five words" caricatures, the Vorthosy people eventually find that the story has gotten repetitive for them. The game's potential audience is not infinite, so keeping an audience in the long-term is as important as keeping them in the short-term.

A world having a simple identity to grok doesn’t mean it can’t be deep in details. Innistrad might be “gothic horror world” but that doesn’t mean it can’t make Vorthoses happy.

Game Complexity Balance

Do you think it's worth increasing a game's initial complexity just to set up for future design space?

It’s a balancing act.

Modern Masters Rarity

New 19 Feb 2015 Asked by notreallygoodatcommingupwithname 48 Comments

Why was Tarmogoyf, Bob and Vendilion Clique raised to mythic rarity in the first Modern Masters? Were you just scared of experiencing a Chronicles 2.0? In the past you have said that complexity and balancing for limited formats define the rarity of a card. Are there going to be any changes to the rarity of cards that are going to be in Modern Masters 2015?

I said those two were the major factors. They are not the only ones. The tricky balancing act of Modern Masters products is getting the cards into the hands of players who don’t own them without destroying the value of the cards for players who do own them.

Art vs Recognition

You are printing many cards in Modern Masters with a different art. I know it's part of the product to have new things, but I'm feeling that adding this set's Tooth and Nail or Arcbound Ravager won't help people recognize them easily.

It’s a balancing act. New art gets many players excited but we also want art being a tool players can use to recognize the cards. Note that we try not to do too many different pictures of the same card (except if it’s the kind of card we reprint a lot in expansions which means it keeps getting new art by the rule that new expansion cards always have new art.
