Ajani and Nekusar Trivia

New 25 May 2023 Asked by snoozyrobin 50 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday and I have a craving for trivia.

Anything you can tell me about Ajani Goldmane or Nekusar?

In the very first market research of planeswalkers (in Lorwyn), Ajani was a distant fifth, but as players have gotten to know him, he’s climbed to be one of the most popular. Happy Birthday!

Re non-humanoid planeswalkers (about the cat/dog planeswalker): in the 1st issue of the Ajani Goldmane comic, he and Tamiyo encounter an insect planeswalker called Grist.

Grist appeared in the first Modern Horizons.

Ajani's Role Perception

Just wanted to assure you that my first playgroup and I, when I was new and knew even less about the lore than I do today, found it readily apparent that Ajani was a healer and provider of support. Ajani Goldmane's first ability heals his player. His second revitalizes the army around him. His role as mentor has become yet more apparent with the addition of Green, finding creatures is like training them; he's Chiron. Wasn't called 'Mentor of Heroes' on Theors, the Greek Plane by coincidence, eh?

I always thought it was obvious until it came up on Blogatog that to a bunch of players it wasn’t obvious. A good design lesson - don’t assume players will just get everything.

Ajani's Status Clarified

So a question that sparked a fierce debate recently on Facebook has lead me to seek the truth from the head of magic itself. Ajani Goldmane. Is he, or is he not dead. I seem to be the crazy person to think that vengeant is a title, and not a surname that makes Goldmane and Vengeant to different characters.

Ajani is alive and well and I n the current story. Vengeant is a title.

Ajani the Cat

Happy birthday! More than a year ago, I told you that I named one of our new cats "Ajani Goldmane." He's doing well! Easily the laziest, fattest cat I've ever seen, but he uses the weight to bully his brother. We usually call him "Johnny."

My family just got two cats, and I convinced my parents to name one of them Ajani Goldmane. Just thought you might like that!

I do. : )

Planeswalker Reprints

Since core sets are going away, what is the planeswalker reprints like Liliana of the Veil or Ajani Goldmane?

I think we’re exploring the idea of using reprinted planeswalkers in normal expansions when they make sense. Thoughts?
