Red's Rummaging Rules

New 16 Dec 2018 Asked by rivercrab 35 Comments

Card draw and counterspells, which were in a bit of power slump, have been increasing in power lately, with stand out examples like Chart a Course or Disallow. But Red's rummaging has sticked with its Tormenting Voice mechanics - which makes it less appealing than card draw and more vulnerable to counterspells. Has there been any flirtations to bring rummaging to Faithless Looting levels? Or at least make it less counterspell-vulnerable?

Red discards before drawing. That’s what separates it from blue looting. We can theoretically get more aggressive with the power level, but we’re not going to change the basics of how rummaging works.

Reprints Decision Factors

How does design decide when to do verbatim reprints (like Tormenting Voice) vs functional reprints (Incinerate vs Lightning Strike)?

That call is usually made by the creative team. Does the old name and concept fit the current world? Development occasionally steps in if having two versions of the same card has tournament issues.

I really hope that the next reprint of Tormenting Voice features Bolas being bothered by Sarkhan, to complete the cycle.

We’ll keep it in mind. : )
