Stonecoil Serpent

Stonecoil Serpent Query

I just want to know why Stonecoil Serpent wasn't a *Hydra*? Were there already too many in the set/standard? It's always felt like it should have been a mechanical hydra.

It’s only got one head.

Serpent Naming Issue

I feel that that previous question wasn't fully parsed. Why WASN'T Stonecoil Serpent a Serpent-type, if that precedent is in place?

The word “serpent” can mean different things. It can be a giant sea monster, often with legs, or a synonym for snake. The creature type Serpent is the former definition. For the latter definition, we use the creature type Snake.Stonecoil Serpent is a giant snake, but not a sea monster, so it gets the creature type that matches that definition. That said, it’s probably a bad idea to use “serpent” in its snake definition in card titles because the Serpent creature type exists.Come for the behind-the-scenes Magic knowledge, leave knowing a little more about the English language. : )

Serpent Type Confusion

New 19 Jan 2020 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 30 Comments

The fact that Stonecoil Serpent isn't a serpent is confusing and leads to play mistakes when combined with the new creature that makes Serpents unblockable. Have you considered avoiding the name "Serpent" for creatures that aren't actually serpents?

The default rule is if your name includes a supported creature type, you are that creature type. Note this only applies if the word is the same definition as that word. Creatures that are adjective “Giant” need not be creature type Giant.

No reminder text on Stonecoil Serpent? Who was responsible for that decision?

We often leave reminder text off rares and mythic rares for evergreen mechanics.

Creature Type Names

How do you feel about cards with a misleading name (e.g. Stonecoil Serpent not being a serpent)?

As a general rule, cards with a supported creature type in their name are that creature type. The word “serpent” is odd as it has two meanings, and the card meant it as the snake definition, as opposed to sea monster definition. Probably that means it should have been called Steamcoil Snake.

Serpent vs Snake

In light of Stonecoil Serpent, which is a snake and not a serpent, can you explain why Serpent and Snake are separate types / what the difference between them is?

Serpents are giant sea monsters. Snakes are, well, snakes.
