Symbol Status Clarification

For purposes of Symbol Status, does Mirrodin Pure count as a separate expansion from New Phyrexia? (One Mirrodin Pure card was actually printed, Pristine Talisman.)

Yes, it counts.

Mana Burn Removal

Could you discuss the removal of mana burn? It seems like something that was a good check or balance for players, made people pay more attention to how they used their resources. For example, Pristine Talisman can be used to tap and gain 1 life, without any repercussions for wasting the mana.

Mana burn is a rule which is complicated to teach new players (they have to see a card like Manaflare to even understand how such a thing can happen) and comes up less than 1 in every 100 games.  Yes, it was flavorful and yes it could lead to interesting gameplay. It just didn’t pass the threshold needed to add the complexity it did. We’d much rather use those complexity points on other things that will matter more often.
