About Simpler Card Names

New 05 Aug 2021 Asked by sword-of-pride-and-prejudice 41 Comments

A lot of Dungeons and Dragons cards have short, unembellished names (e.g. Flameskull Owlbear, Tiamat). These make them stand out somewhat from normal Magic card names. Do you know why the decision was made to just go with the monster manual entries rather than naming cards like "Ornery Owlbear", "Cackling Flameskull", or "Tiamat, Dragon-Mother"?

We normally do that in Magic because we have to name a lot more cards like it. Tiamat, and such, didn’t have that problem.

Was an owlbear considered for ikoria or is it too close to dnd?

I think an owlbear is considered a D&D creature.

Owlbear in MTG?

New 14 Jul 2016 Asked by badguylikesyou 35 Comments

While I realize DnD and MTG are vastly different properties, do you think MTG will ever see an Owlbear printed? (Changlings don't count)

We try to make sure we keep some delineation between the properties.

D&D and Magic Crossover

Question attempt 5. Since WoTC picked up D&D, I've always wondered what are the chances of us ever seeing a Displacer Beast or Owlbear? Will D&D always be separate from Magic? Thanks for answering.

We have made a conscious attempt not to “cross the streams”. Having our biggest brands both be fantasy when we want them each to have their own unique identity is tricky.
