Nine Lives

Translating Nine Lives Card

New 15 May 2021 Asked by vriskanon 52 Comments

Did Nine Lives pose a localisation problem? If memory serves, many cultures don't give cats nine lives, sometimes more or less.

One of the flexibilities we give our translators is that they’re allowed to capture the essence of the spell rather than translate exactly the English words.

Hexproof's Continued Existence

I hope hexproof sticks around for effects like Nine Lives and Lotus Field, but less on things like Narset and Geist of Saint Traft.

Hexproof hasn’t left.

Leonin Popularity Issue

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by zexalousthoughts-blog 8 Comments

(About Leonin)There is in fact a whole ton of cat-like species in pop-culture. People have pointed out the Cowardly Lion (Wizard of Oz), the Khajiit (Skyrim),the CatKind (Doctor Who), the Caitians (Star Trek), Puss (Shrek),and so Cat people are in pop culture. Also, Magic does different things with established races (stupid goblins, vain elves, legged merfolk). Couldn't you play up Cat tropes with them more (aversion to water, sneaky (evasion),see in dark, nine lives, ect.) to make them resonant

There’s theory and then there’s data. In theory, people should really like them. In practice, they’re not as beloved as you would assume. (Not that no one likes them, they just haven’t risen to the popularity of goblins, elves, merfolk and vampires/zombies.)
