Fynn, the Fangbearer

Fynn Design Appreciation

New 30 Mar 2023 Asked by jmart1841 33 Comments

I can't express how excited I was to see Fynn, the Fangbearer revealed a few years ago. Being able to put together a Deathtouch-matters Poison deck now has been such an amazing experience that it's gotten me invested in seeing how far it can take me on Arena. Please thank everyone involved with Fynn's design for the amazing payoff.

Will do,

Designing Fynn, the Fangbearer

What was the thought process behind designing Fynn, the Fangbearer? He has an infect adjacent ability but it feels oddly placed for Kaldheim - though there are ways to make it work. any chance poison may come back in the future?

I think there’s a decent chance poison will return one day.

Future Sight Keywords Usage

If Fynn, the Fangbearer were printed in a Horizons set could they have given your deathtouch creatures Poisonous 2 or are the weird Future Sight keywords off limits?

It’s not technically off limits, but it isn’t something we’d do lightly.

About Fynn, Deathtouch Tribal

New 31 Jan 2021 Asked by quantext 60 Comments

Hello Mark. I'd like to ask about Fynn, the Fangbearer from Kaldheim. Deathtouch tribal hadn't had a lot of support in the past, but the two previous deathtouch tribal cards (Hooded Blightfang and Vraska, Swarm's Eminence) both included black in their identity. I was curious, what made him mono-green instead of green/black?

Cards aren’t often made in a vacuum, but made for a purpose. For example, Finn wasn’t designed as an open-ended design and then placed in the appropriate colors. It was designed to fill a monogreen slot. The designer of the card didn’t ask “what colors could this be?” They asked, “is this monogreen?”

Poison Counters in Kaldheim

Hi Mark, you said Fynn, the Fangbearer would not have been the only card in Kaldheim to interact with poison counters, but now the set is spoiled and it seems to be the only one, or were you referring to Vorinclex, too?

No, I just answered the question I remembered reading rather than the question actually asked. I thought the question was “Are there any other creatures with poison in the set?” when, in fact, the question was “Is this the only one?” Just a brain fart on my part. Fynn’s the only one.

Thicket Basilisk and Deathtouch

New 15 Jan 2021 Asked by pedrohf28 40 Comments

Do Creatures like Thicket Basilisk count as deathtouch? For example, would they trigger Fynn, the Fangbearer ability?

No. While the Thicket Basilisk was one of the inspirations for the ability, it technically works differently than deathtouch and thus can’t use the deathtouch keyword.
