Wordiness in Strixhaven

New 15 Apr 2021 Asked by dabudder 63 Comments

Strixhaven seems very wordy. (The MDFCs in particular.) Was this a concern in set design?

Word count is a metric we’re always watching. Note that it’s a means to measure complexity, but is not unto itself a cause of complexity. Sometimes twenty words is clearer and easier to understand than ten. The MDFCs are rare and mythic rare, so they can bear the brunt of more words than lower rarity cards that show up at a much higher rate.

Apocalypse Design Insight

Hey Mark, it’s my birthday! If you have any, I would love some never-before-seen trivia on my favorite card (Always Watching), my favorite set (Apocalypse), or my favorite deck (Tolarian Academy Combo). Even if you don’t have anything special about those, thanks for everything you do. I’ve been having an ongoing conversation about Magic with you for years, and that’s awesome.

Apocalypse ended up being the first set to be block designed even though the concept rules didn’t exist yet. Henry Stern and I independently had the same idea of holding back the enemy spells for its own set. Happy Birthday!

Character Traits Analogy

I want to compare you to three Mtg cards/characters: Niv Mizzet (big ego but general awesomeness); Always Watching (capacity of staying constantly energized); Sidar Kondo )family man)

Interesting.

How did you get close enough to Spirit of St. Louis to taste it??

I can’t say. The Smithsonian is always watching.
