Power Conduit

Potential for Giant Fan Return

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by prathin 21 Comments

Mark, I know we have Power Conduit, but could we see something like Giant Fan come to black boarder that effectively move other counter types? Or do you think with all the doubling effects now it would be problematic?

Black border has to say what the counter becomes. It can’t make it something mentioned on the card like Giant Fan. That’s why it’s Un.

Giant Fan in Black

Could we ever see Giant Fan in black border?

Power Conduit in Mirrodin was me doing just that. That’s as close as black border can get to Giant Fan’s functionality.

Power Conduit and Planeswalkers

If Power Conduit had been designed today, would it have a third mode letting you put a loyalty counter on a planeswalker?

Probably not as it’s the kind of thing that breaks easiest. Planewalker loyalty counters are why we can’t reprint Doubling Season in a Standard-legal set, by the way.

Speaking of giant fan, how come those effects dont show up in black border? The only similar card i can think of is fate transfer and its very inefficient and restrictive.

Power Conduit in original Mirrodin is me making the best black bordered Giant Fan I could. It’s design was literally “Let’s make a black-bordered Giant Fan.”

Giant Fan's Black Border

On the subject of a black-bordered Giant Fan: Clockspinning and Proliferate work by having you choose a counter that already exists, so that's also an option for making something less "hard-coded" than Power Conduit

But those require a counter already being there. Giant Fan can turn any counter into any other type of counter. I do think we can get close to Giant Fan but “close” is not the same as “exact”.

Black-Bordered Giant Fan

Looking at some UN-cards and I was wondering. Could Giant Fan be printed in Black Border?

Not as is. Power Conduit from Mirrodin was me bringing Giant Fan as much as I could to black-border. The black-bordered game cannot just turn counters into whatever is mentioned by the rules text of the card it’s put on. The card that generates it has to be able to name what it is.
