Nantuko Shrine

Designing Synergistic Cards

So, with the release of Slime Against Humanity, obscure cards like Nantuko Shrine got way, way more popular because of the synergy betweet the two. Does R&D ever develop new cards in order to bolster more older obscure cards, or is it usually just a coincidence?

We make open-ended designs aware of things that exist in the past.

Insight into Commander-Playable Cards

There is a clear focus, even in premier sets, on Commander-playable cards. On the design team, is there any self-limiting or even self-prohibiting regarding the creation of cards like Nantuko Shrine - cards that are antithetical to Commander play, but otherwise very interesting design space?

Functionally non-Commander playable legendary creatures are getting harder to make.

Impact of Shrine Updates

Re: Shrines. Plenty of creatures receive updates all the time. Just look at Lords which became elves, goblins, and merfolk. Or the new Noble errata. Or how the rules changed walls to function so now they have “Defender”. Artifact creatures became Golems. Why can’t Nantuko Shrine be a Shrine? If it’s because it makes other shrines better, making a lord an elf, functionally improved Elf tribal, no?

Making a non-Shrine a Shrine has a much bigger impact that making a creature an elf. Also true for Locus. : )
