Midnight Reaper

Black Mana Life Loss Rules

"Midnight Reaper was made during a time we were experimenting with doing all life loss in black as damage." What was the reasoning behind this experiment, and why did it end?

We’re always looking for ways to condense rules to make things simpler where we can. We ended up deciding that it was a flavor hit with minimal gain as most players understand life loss to players, so we reverted back.

Difference in Card Mechanics

Several zombies have death triggers that cause you to draw and lose a life -- for example, Undead Augur says "Whenever Undead Augur or another Zombie you control dies, you draw a card and you lose 1 life." So, why does Midnight Reaper instead say "Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, Midnight Reaper deals 1 damage to you and you draw a card"? Is there any purposeful flavor/mechnical/etc. difference between losing 1 life and the card doing 1 damage to you?

Golgari Card Advantage

Happy new year, MaRo! I just played a couple Standard tournaments over the past week and was shocked at how easily could Golgari (BG) decks generated card advantage. Is it normal for these two colors to be that good at continous card draw? (Edgewall inkeeper, Trail of Crumbs, The Great Henge, Liliana from WAR, Castle Lochtwain, Moldervine Reclamation, Midnight Reaper are all nuts)

Black and green are two and three at card draw, behind blue. That said, yeah, we could probably pull back a little, especially in green.
